Can Jan sprint at all?

He sprinted to a world championship in 1993. The chances of him going for or getting a time bonus
against sprinters is about nil.

Not this year. He certainly has won a lot of big races by outrunning his breakaway companions. I
think you are noticing what I saw, that he does not seem to have much of a jump. I almost think he
feels that he will finish faster by not overdoing his accelerations. Whether he is offensive or
defensive, he takes his time winding up. Notice also how rare for him to even so much as get out of
the saddle.

Also the Green Jersey is still live and the Ozzie sprinters won't let many points go.

Oslo, 1993. Since then, I can only remember the sprint in the Col de Madlaine (sp?) stage
1998, where he won vs. Pantani. Pantani probably did not try hard to win, still it seemed
really hard for Jan.

He was twice (or even three times?) second in the world cup race of Zürich from a small
group sprint.

Stage 5 of the 1999 Vuelta a Espana to Ciudad Rodrigo also saw Jan win a bunch sprint in front of
Abraham Olano and Frank VDB.

He then went on to win the whole enchilada.

It doesn't really GO anywhere. Just out and back along to the levee road. Stay near the front so you
can see the approaching potholes-there are a few nasty ones.

Olano, was in a situation similar to Beloki this year. Self admittedly, the best shape of his life.
After that stage Olano beat Jan in the ITT and he dropped Jan big time in the "Angliru" thanks to
his teammate and friend "Triki" Beltran (yes the USPS guy), all after being brought down by Van der
Bower (sp?) in the previous descent and breaking a rib.

He retired a few days later and Jan won the Vuelta (even if all the fun was put by VDB).

And this brings to my memory that Ullrich lost the last ITT the year he won the tour (to Olano by
about 1 min?) and he was beaten by Lance and Igor.G.Galdeano a couple of years ago. So maybe after
all Jan does not relly progress so much after 3 weeks? Maybe he needs 35C to operate after all those
years in Rostock?

He won the amateur worlds that year.

He also got top 3 in a small field sprint for a world cup classic -- I think the Championship of
Zurich -- a few years ago.

Yes, Jan was junior world champion at Oslo in '93 when Lance won the big dog race.

Everyone who thinks he can get a time bonus is dreaming.

Jan sprints well at the end of a long road race, when lesser riders are tired, but he absolutely
cannot compete with real sprinters who are fresh.

After tomorrow it's all going to be for the sprinters. The GC will be settled by the ITT.

At that time it was the old amateur title - any age eligible. U23 didn't start till 1996.

There was no U-23 at that time. LANCE was 20 y.o. (second youngest ever to win pro words, IIRC).
Ullrich won the amateur race (no age restriction).

Reading this was better than a walk down memory lane in the cyclingnews archives. I also recall
another interesting story from that Vuelta -- the guy finishing in 4th place on GC had his best
result after coming back to racing following cancer treatments. He really surprised everyone by
showing some promise as a stage racer.
