Campy Shimano compatibility

I'm sure these questions have been asked a million times, but knowing how often products change these days I hope someone does not mind answering these questions again. My current setup is 2004 Ultegra Shifters, 2005 Dura Ace Crank, 2004 Ultegra Front Derailleur, 2003 Dura Ace Rear Derailleur, 2004 Dura Ace Cassette. A friend has offered me a brand new set of Campy 9 Speed Record Shifters and Chorus Front Derailleur. If I install these, will they work with my Shimano rear derailleur? If I get a Campy Rear derailleur will it work with the Shimano cassette? Any other issues here anyone can think of? When I ask if these combinations will "work", I realy mean work well. Smooth, fun operation is more important than looks and status. Thank you.

I'm sure these questions have been asked a million times, but knowing how often products change these days I hope someone does not mind answering these questions again.

Simple answer is that campy 9 spacing is different than shimano 9, and campy and and shimano RDs have different throw ratios and are generally incompatible. A campy RD and 9 shifters usually works well enough with an otherwise shimano 9 drivetrain.It will work better with a jtek shiftmate device.

The cog spacing business in that link is just BS.

Yeah....Shimnno 9 uses 2.56mm spacers and 1.76 cogs,and campy 9 is 2.8mm spacers and 1.75 cogs end to end, in each lines loose cog cassettes. Neither varies the spacing as indicated in the blurb.

makes sense, im curious, was there a difference in cogs and spacers on the old index gear for pre 2001 shifters?
