  1. I have a set of vintage Campy Record hubs. These hubs have 120mm spacing in the rear and use alloy washers between the cone and the locknut.

The peculiar thing I noticed about the *front* hub is that the thickness of the washers is uneven between the left side and the right side. One side uses a 1.5mm washer and the other side uses a 2.0mm washer. At first, I thought the hubs were rebuilt improperly by whomever I bought the hubs used from. However, I recently ran across photos of similar sets of hubs (120mm rear spacing and alloy washers) on eBay that show the exact same setup.

Does anyone know if this setup is intentional or a mistake?

  2. How do you tell the left from the right?

I have several such hubs. They all use this spacing, presumably to make
the spacing come out to 100mm.

    Randomness comes in bunches.

  3. Good question. I cannot tell which side the ticker washer should be on.

As for making the spacing come out fo 100mm, to the best of my measurement (using a Park caliper), the hub is 100.5mm wide, not 100mm. That would indicate to me that the 2.0mm washer is too thick and that the hub really needs 1.5mm washers on both sides.

  4. You might like to measure that again. All of mine are precisely 100mm.

  5. Regardless of the locknut-to-locknut measurement, aren't we at the least talking about a 0.5mm dish when the front wheel is built with one of these hubs? Granted, 0.5mm is probably not significant.

  6. I personally cannot build a wheel that precisely.
