It certainly will. The spacing is set by yourself adjusting the cable tension. I us an 8 speed cassette for time trialing with a 10 speed mech without any problem.

Actually, spacing is set by:

The indexed shifters
The distance of the cable anchor on the rear der. to the pivots (or the leverage produced by the pull of the cable)

But mostly by the indexed shifters. Haven't tried to mix Campy 9 and 10, but comparing my bro's Campy 9 der to my Campy 10, they sure looked the same.

Only time I ever had rear der. leverage to be a problem is when I wanted to fit one of those cool looking (I'm a sucker for bling, too) SRAM rear der's to my MTB. Close, but not quite... Shimano and SRAM just aren't the same...

No he isn't even half right. that sets the limits of the derailleur. The only thing that dictates the spacing between gear shifts is the geometry of the derailleur and the amount the cable moves per shift...which is determined by the shifter. For all intents and purposes the geometry of the 9 and 10 speed derailleur is the same, therefore like everyone else is saying, keep your old shifters and the new derailleur will work fine.

i plan on mixing alot lol... i might ditch the 2004 ultegra i got. i want to switch to a campy setup but i want to keep the ksyrium wheels with the shimano cassette. if i remember right, the spacing on the 2 cassettes is very similar. I read somewhere that the 4 smallest cogs need to be shimmed, anyone else have experiance with this?

On my tandem I have 10speed Campy shifters with a 9 speed Shim cassette and Dura-Ace derailleur, with no mods except for the cable is attached to the derailleur on the wrong side of the screw (it slightly changes the effective movement per shift). It works flawlessly. I did this primarily because I REALLY prefer the shifters of Campy, but everything else is better for the tandem in shimano (cassette options, wheels, etc.)
