  1. Can someone shed some light on the incompatibility issue between "new" Campy
Ergo shifters and older derailleurs? I have a 9-speed Chorus derailleur
that's no older than 2000, but I'm not exactly sure of which model year.
It's right on the cusp of the alleged changes, that's for sure.

I want to upgrade from downtube index shifters to Ergo, but I'm not sure how
to go about figuring out what will work. I seem to recall also some rumors
that the issues are just imaginary/marketing, aimed at getting people like
me to throw everything out and buy all new stuff. Any help from the experts?

"Old" rear changers have the spring adjuster ["B" screw] on
the upper pivot . "New" models adjust that on the lower pivot.

In practice, the variance is so slight as to almost always
be negligible. Try it. Both Peter and I commonly mix these
on expensive bikes for picky customers to great success.
Some riders, however, report difficulties, as Campagnolo
    admonishes.

And certainly do not buy a new crank. That's completely
    overhyped.

  3. The old and new versions are indeed very different in the amount of cable
pull they use to operate. You will have people tell you they are
interchangeable, but that will depend on how high your standards are
    regarding shift indexing.

As far as how to identify the RD as old version or new, I have no idea.

Great, thanks. That's just easy enough for me to figure out! I'm pretty sure
my derailleur is 2001 or 2002, so I should be OK. Will check though.

I mixed some 9 speed parts when I first went to 10. I have one bike all 10
speed and the other is converted with only the levers, cassette and chain
being from the 10 speed group. They both shift better than any 9 speed
system ever did but the all 10 speed is slightly quicker and smoother. I
didn't even change the pulleys though and I would bet with that change there
would be an even smaller difference. They both shift really excellent.

Sure, in spite of what is published by 'official' and other web sites, there is
no propblem mixing ANY Campagnolo shifter and ANY rear der, regardless of year.

Just put them on, adjust the rear dere, go ride.

I can tell you ur standards are VERY high, have to be for a bike shop and I can
tell you we use modern 10s rear ders for replacement rear ders for every
shifter system we see, from Campagnolo.

They are not 'indeed very different', from our exptensive experience with
    dozens of Campagnolo equipped bicycles.

  8. I have 1998 Chorus Ergo shifters. I used the shifters to shift a 1993
Centaur medium cage rear derailleur during a mountain ride. It worked
fine. If I concentrated, I could tell the shifting was not as
instantaneous as with a complete before or after the rear derailleur
change setup. But unless you knew the shifter and rear derailleur
were not of the same era and concentrated on the quickness of the
shifting, you would never know by using it.

Should be "2003 Centaur medium cage rear deraileur." Not 1993.
