I've just installed a set of 2007 Campy Centaur Ergo shifters. There appears to be a problem with the right one - the finger lever (upshift) does not stay flush in line (behind) the brake lever but "hangs" somewhat offset. This jams and prevents the thumb lever from operating and downshifting. I have to use my index finger to "lift" or push the upshift lever back behind the brake lever and hold it there to unjam the thumb lever and allow it to downshift.
The left shifter does not exhibit such behaviour. Can anyone tell me what's the likely cause of this problem? Is it a warranty issue or is it something I can resolve by myself? (Major rebuilding is out of the question). This is my first foray into Campy after 4 generations of Shimano and I must say it does not induce confidence. 🙁
Like you, I have had several generations of Shimano and Campagnolo levers. I had a similar problem once that was caused by incorrect hood placement.
The rubber hoods have small rubber tabs at the front near the base of the lever that must be seated properly for shifting to work correctly. If these are not seated right, they can interefere with the rachet mechanism. The little book that comes with the shifters when new shows a couple of diagrams if I remember correctly.

I had Shimano years ago, I've switch to Campy in the early 90's for everything except my touring bike;-]
Anyways, this is most likely the case, as mentioned. There are a couple of little rubber "tabs" on the hoods that fit into corresponding alignment holes on the lever bodies. These tabs keep the hoods in alignment and prevent exactly what you're seeing. It's possible it's inside the lever, but I'd bet the hood is the problem.

No luck. I unwrapped the bars, peeled back the rubber hood, uninstalled the shifter and then redid everything *very carefully* making sure that the rubber "tabs" were properly seated. The upshift lever is still offset perpendicularly from the brake lever and jams the thumb lever. The strange thing is that the upshift lever isn't engaged in any way, but there's just a slight degree of "loose play" from the "flush with brake lever" position that's preventing the thumb lever from working.

I think the hood is somehow fouling the underside of the lever, around the shift lever. make sure the tab on the underside of the hood is in the little notch of the lever and the bar tape isn't in the way either.

Negative. The under-tab of the hood is properly inserted into the slot of the lever and the bar tape is not fouling the lever in any way. The problem remains even when bar tape has been taken off.

2 springs bring the lever to the center, one in the front and a woundup spring in the rear. One is gooned up I think. If I could see it, I could evaluate and fix, perhaps.
Push the "brake release" pin in, it's in the recess on the lever, near the body.
This pin allows the brakes to release for tire removal. In the released position it sometimes causes the lever to operate as you mention.

Sorry, but this was one of the first things I checked. It is properly engaged (not released). However, upon release, the finger lever is still problematic.

I think you're right, Peter. I've ruled out operator error in this case. It's nearly certain this is a damaged mechanism due to manufacturing fault. Not in my experience. But when it happens to you, who cares. Innards for Centaur for 2007 is different than any time previously, more akin to Xenon in the past.
