Campy bits

I just shopped around for a whole Ultegra groupset and in order of

A myth, like the unicorn, like God. Campy and cheap don't go together
in Aus.

With the power of the mighty oz dollar, I'm thinking of ordering in
from the US for a new chain, new chain rings and two new cassettes
that I just replaced, for the future.

I haven't found any cheap Campy stuff in Australia whatsoever. For
the bits that wear on my bikes (cassettes and chains mainly) I usually
buy them mailorder from the UK or US. I've had particularly good luck
with Deeside Cycles in the UK (www.deesidecycles.com), and Sheldon
Brown in the US (www.sheldonbrown.com).

Which one's the dark side? I like having ergos that I can rebuild
when they repair, rather than having to throw away.

Yup. Unfortunately there's a perception that Campy is ultra
expensive, and the distributor marks the stuff up accordingly. I note
that fewer Australian bike shops are stocking Campy at all these days,
due no doubt to the number of people voting with their feet and either
buying Shimano or buying mailorder.

What was interesting (as in the Chinese proverb) was that the winner's
prize was $15. I don't know what you get for 2nd or 3rd (I came 2nd once
but forgot), but 3rd would be lucky to get back their $10 entry fee. At
my last club, it was $30/20/10 for 1st/2nd/3rd for a $7 entry fee, which
seems a bit more generous - even poor old 3rd still takes something
home. Maybe the higher grades pay more (would make sense)...?

Let's throw this open - what do your club(s) charge for entry and pay
for a win/place (state currency if not AUD please)? No need to name the
club if you don't want to.

At my club (Carnegie), it's $ 10 to enter. Prizemoney is determined
on number of entrants. The most I have got is $ 150 for second in a
handicap race. But I've alos pickjed up only $ 20 for second in a B
grade crit. The A grade winners in the current summer crit series can
take over $ 200 when the field is big (maybe 70 riders)

Iv'e ordered cranks , chainrings and assorted bolts from these guys
without any problems.

Andrew, the prize money is higher in the higher grades :-) Some of the
club's race entry fee goes to the NSW cycling federation too. Just
think of club prize money as offsetting the cost of entry
occasionally, and nothing more. On the other hand, if you win an open
race then you'll pick up a bit more cash.
