  1. Someone asked me to rebuild a wheelset for them. Over the phone they said they had 8 speed Campy
with a freewheel. They said the bike has ergo shifters, from the mid 90's, but has a freewheel
cluster. I never knew about that being made.

Is anyone out there familiar with a setup like that? I have not seen the bike yet, he may be wrong.
    I hope so....

    Thanks,

    Bruce

Could be a Sachs 8-speed freewheel. Would work fine with Campy 8.

Yup. I have seen both Mavic hubs and Sachs New Success hubs with 8 speed Sachs freewheels and Campy
8 speed shifting. I have personally used the Syncro II 8 speed shifting with Sach 8 12x24 freewheel
on an American Classic hub and it worked pretty well actually.

    Good Luck!

Yeah, but I used to use the Sachs version of the Ergos with a NS rear derailleur and either a
Shimano 8sp cassette or a Sachs FW.

If it works now, if you re-build the wheel as either a FW or 8sp cassette, it should still work...

A Sachs Eight freewheel over a Campagnolo threaded hub with pointy ergos was a common setup
    in the era.

  6. Thanks everyone for your excellent input.

When I see the bike I will let you know exactly what is there.

Sachs FWs were made in both Shimano and Campy spacing. Phil Brown

That might be true, but I've never seen a Shimano-spaced 8-speed Sachs freewheel (and I've
looked for them). None of my suppliers ever offered one, and I never saw one in the Sachs
    catalogs of the day.

I thought Sachs FWs were Sachs FWs. You got what they made... and it was spaced for Sachs shifters
(that just happened to be Campy compatible.)

I ran a lot of these guys over the years, they were all the same...

  10. Unless you use a Sachs rear hub, you have to spend a lot of time replacing Campy axels when they
break. Until I got a Sachs hub, I was replacing bent and broken axels twice a year. The cheapest fix
is to use an Ultegra wheel with an 8 speed Shimano cassette with the Wheels Mfg red spacer kit. If
you rebuild the original, he'll be stuck when some cogs wear out on the Sachs freewheel. They are
    very hard to get.

I'd heard that, too. I bought some of those freewheels years ago, and made no mention to the people
I bought them from what kind of shifter I had. Actually, I had friction when I started. But they did
work fine with 8-speed Ergo shifters and a Campy derailleur. There was not that much difference in
spacing between the Campy and Shimano 8-speed, (0.2mm difference, roughly the same as between Campy
and Shimano 9-speed versions), so probably you can use either.

  12. I was under the impression that when Sachs first came out with their 8 speed freewheel, it was with
Shimano spacing and had black spacers. The later models had brown spacers and were spaced the same
as Campy.(5 mm) The Sachs Hub was a great hub. The axel was covered from the threads on the hub to
the locknut to help support the extra weight it carried.

Sachs Ergos were made by Campagnolo with an insert for Shimano or Sachs rear changers.

Campagnolo Ergos won't shift a Sachs rear changer without modification.

I can't say we were ever able to find Campagnolo-spaced Sachs freeewheels aftermarket. They came on
new bikes and we sold reworked freewheels with the old spacers refitted when they were worn (
couldn't get reliable delivery on individual cogs)
