    CTC stopped providing the facility of the Camping Card International in
    May/June 2005.

    I joined directly with the "Federation Francaise de Camping et de Caravaning"
    in May last year, by post, and it cost me £19.09. I think it also included a
    sort of guide book which wasn't very useful.

    This year I renewed on line and it only cost me £12.84 ( E18) which has got to
    be excellent value. You do, however, need to be able to read a bit of French.
    The web site is www.ff.cc.fr

    By the way the cards are only available for the calendar current year -- i.e.
    regardless of when you join it expires on 31 December.

    I have used the Camping Card all over Europe and it means that my passport and
    other important documents ( travel and bike insurance etc) stay safely sealed
    in a waterproof package at the bottom of my bag and only comes out for
    crossing back into UK.

    I don't ever recall being offered discounts when using it but it saves a lot
    of hassle when travelling and sits along with my other cards in my waist belt.

    Well worth it for cycle campers -- so you don't have to join yet another club
    like the Caravan & Camping Club to get one!

    (well, France, Spain, Portugal at least) and I've never found any need
    for one, nor any ocasion it might be of any use, never mind £20's
    worth of use.

    What is it for exactly ? Isn't it some left-over thing from about
    1930 ?

    It covers the campsite against losses they might incur by one staying there
    upto a certain amount.
    CCI can be had for free if you are an RAC member or have a Company Car
    covered by the RAC.

    £12:84 isn't £20!
    I personally will never hand my passport over to any campsite for them to keep
    overnight. The camping card contains all my passport information that might be
    required by any local "authority"
    I have camped in Norway, Sweden, Denmark, Belgium, France, Spain, Germany,
    Austria, Hungary, Slovakia, Italy, Slovenia. The card has always been accepted
    in all of those countries as a formal method of identification and indeed is a
    guarenttee of my status.

    Outside Europe I have camped in Bahrain, UAE, Oman, India, Pakistan but not
    recently!

    Ah, I see. It's odd how the ID number is optional but the place of issue
    is compulsory.
