Identical. Campag Neutron/Nucleons are 622 rims, just like
Mavic Open Pros.

I like my Campy Record / Mavic Open Pro wheelset. The
Neutrons are nice if you must have a boutique wheelset.

Agree, at one point, Neutrons could be had for $550 or so
new. That's not too bad for boutiques. In contrast, a well
built Campy Record/Mavic OP wheelset was in the $400-450
range. However, with the current euro to dollar situation,
Neutrons "wholesale" are something like $625 or more. That
means you'll be lucky to find them "retail" for under $700.
You can still find Record/Mavic handbuilts in the $400-450
range, your choice...

They are indeed 700. The various European countries call
that "28 inch". That's just a nominal designation, like 700
itself. There are various brands of (normal 700 size)
tubulars with both "27 inch" and "28 inch" on the labels
currently.

Ensure that you know which one you're buying. Neutron now is
available in a clincher version besides the normal tubular

Actually not quite identical. I've got some Nucleons and
I've got some Open Pros. The Nucleons are a LOT bigger. It's
a brutal struggle to get Michelins on the Nucleons, no sweat
on the Mavics.

Vittorias are easy to get on the Nucleons, but are a loose
fit and sometimes blow off when I'm inflating them on Mavic
Ksyriums. Haven't tried them on the Open Pros, but I
suspect the same.

Apparently the French and the Italians don't agree on
exactly what the 700 mm applies to--overall wheel size, tire
bead inner diameter, whatever. Moral: French tires on French
rims. Italian tires on Italian rims. Good luck with
Vredentstein, Continental, etc.

By the way, 700mm is about 27.3 inches--not 27 inches but
not 28 either.

First, for some reason, Euro companies call some wheels and
tires '28 inch' altho they are indeed 700c(Sheldon!! calling
Sheldon!!)

Second get a good wheelbuilder to design a wheelset
specifically for you and your needs around Record hubs and
save yourself $300....

$299 for Campy Record/Open Pro Silver/ 14/15DB spokes, from

Thanks for all the comments.....I think I'll be going the
Record or Chorus hubs with Open Pros route. One of my
mail order suppliers (Ribble UK) has Record hubs with
Open Pros (built) for 166 pounds. The have Campag
Neutrons at 315 pounds.

I have now done all the numbers on the weights...Neutrons
actually seem to be slightly heavier on the rear wheel once
you include a skewer. I took 170gm as the weight for 32
Wheelsmith DB14's.

A new rim is obviously expensive too, truing them is
potentially harder. We have some rough roads in NZ!!

Given this fact it is utterly beyond me why anyone would
bother with factory wheels. It must just be the
fashionable look.

You guys seem to agree. Anyone out got and good reasons
for them??

"Cool" factor, believing the marketing talk (lighter, faster
etc) and having problems with crappy build handbuilds are
the main reasons i think. Also it's hard to test or compare
handbuilds because a big part depends on the build. So tests
use factory wheels and people get the best wheels from the
test etcetera.
