Went in to a bike shop today to look at other wheels. A number of them had the mystery hole in the rim so I am comfortable that it is not any kind of defect.

Still, I've never had a rim with the hole in before, and I don't recall having water inside the rim either!

Can anyone confirm this?

I have two sets of Campy Nuetron wheels and all four have the hole. I have the tubular rims and thought the hole was for condensation.

I have the whole on my set of campagnolo protons aswell.

I always assumed it was for drainage of water, as i get a fair amount of water in there after a wet ride.

BUT- just tried tro fit these to my bike.

My (newish 3 month old ) campag chorus cassette was taken off my old wheel (with 6 yr old campag veloce hub).

I came to fit the cassette to the new proton hub and after fitting all the sprockets/ spacers etc (which fit fine), I come to fit the lockring and it's a different thread!

My lockring is basically too small to fit the thread in the hub so basically does not fit. Something is obviously wrong here but being new to the cycle mechanic game I am not sure what it is. I am narrowing it down to:-

1. I have been given a shimano compatible wheel rather then the campag version.

2. the campy lockring thread has changed since I got my original veloce hub 6 years ago.

Can anyone help with the following to enable me to work out which of the above apply:-

a) Would my campag cassette even fit on to a shimano compatible hub?
b) If so, can I get a shimano lockring to lock my campy cassette in place or should I swap the wheel?
c) does anyone know if campag have changed the size of their lockrings in the last 6 years. If so, can I just buy a new lockring?

This is really bugging me now as I just want to get out and ride my bike with my new wheels and can't. grrrrrrrrrrrrr!

Looks like they have a couple of different lockrings. Don't know anything else about the Campy stuff, sure that many others here do.

I'm guessing from your link that I currently have the 26mm thread lockring but need the 27mm oversize lockring to fit my new hub.

Will investigate further.

My Zonda's have the same hole. Must be normal.

the hole is normal, it is for water drainage, both our Protrons and Neutrons have the hole. Campy is quirky about the lockrings. Your wheels should have come with a proper lockring (our LBS always gives us a new lock ring with a wheelset) since the cassettes don't always come with a lockrings.
