yes, I do mean the Cambrian Way (Cardiff - Conwy), as in mr Drake's guidebook. Questions like "GPS,

I've walked some of the Mid Wales sections and am familiar with most of the territory in North
Wales. I've not used a tent when on the route but have used B&B and some of the smaller hostels -
Ty'n y Cornel Y.H. at the head of the Doethie valley should not be missed. With a bit of care I
reckon you could find places to camp wild along most of the route.

It is an excellent long distance route (albeit not an "offical" LDP) but not one to be undertaken
lightly. The full route is 274 miles / 440 kms and you climb in total 61,540 ft / 18,742 metres.

The author, Tony Drake, provides an update sheet to the current edition and it would be a good idea
to get this if your copy of the book is not recent. Cost for that service was a SAE plus 50p in
stamps [ as at 1998], but I'll try and get current info and post current details here.

There is ample scope for getting, shall we say, 'misplaced' en route, so I would certainly take a
GPS if you have one, but with good navigational skills it is not essential. It goes without saying
that you need the relevant maps and a compass.

of doing the Cambrian Way.

I hope that never happens, the concept is fine as it is, with a network of paths and choices rather
than a single prescribed erosion scar ^H^H^H route. Also the low key nature of the existing system,
which is working well (even if I got hammered when I tried it) does not raise the attention of
certain unsympathetic bodies.

We are spared a bureaucratic compromise like the Southern Upland Way, which is planned more for the
benefit of landowning issues than tourists. Seen one sitka, seen them all.
