California Dreamin'

I'll be at my in-laws for Passover, in Calabassas, mid-April. A week later I
have a conference in Monterrey, California.

How long would it take me to ride from Calabassas to Monterrey? What would
be the best route? Just up the 1?

I've only been on short sections of central California coast by bike.
It's been a *long* time since I've been there, but I don't think I'd
pick Hwy 1 to ride on the whole way, though there are certainly nice
sections. Unfortunately, I can't offer anything positive.

I have a brother and a cousin in the Santa Barbara area.

The section "Border to Border" days 28 through day 34 gives detailed
information on the route (in reverse).
The book gives info on:

· The Route
· General local information contacts.
· Things to see and do
· Places to stay and eat
· Elevation maps

mountain range in between so you will either have to catch a ride to a
start point on Coast Highway 1 or find your way from Calabasas to Port
Huneneme.

There is a problem that may make this less pleasant than it first
appears and that is that prevailing winds blow from the northwest.

In winter, things are often different but in summer it is the usual
northwest wind.

Claire is not as tough as you think, and would cheerfully accept a ride to
Santa Barbara or so.

Anyway, I talked about it with the spousal unit, and how we'd farm out
childcare if we did it together. I think it'll remain something I'll do in
my mind, not on the road, until the kids are just a bit older.

Not quite correct. Calabasas is <15 miles from Coast. Las Virginnes
Road becomes Malibu Cyn road and instersects Route 1 in Malibu near
the Malibu Civic Center.

Assuming no night riding, a strong, endurance rider can do it in 2
days. A strong rider, one who isn't dead after doing a century, can
do it in 3 days. An above average rider, 4 days and most recreational
cyclists 5 days. Stop points for a reasonable ride, 1- Santa Barbara,
2-San Luis Obispo 3-Cambria, San Simeon, or Ponte Vedra 4-?

In April, going North, you might encounter head winds. Above Cambria,
the Coastal route has plenty of steep climbs.

Pismo Beach

The Adventure Cycling Pacific Coast route maps are good; map 4 is Santa Barbara to SF, map 5 San Diego to Santa Barbara.
They won't be any help from Calabasas to the coast (Hwy 1). I did Santa Barbara to San Francisco this past July, mostly
following the adventure cycling map but taking a sideways detour through the valley along 154 and Foxen Canyon before
rejoining the map in Guadalupe. (SB->Pismo->San Simeon->Monterey->Santa Cruz->SF)

Yes, there are headwinds, but it's a beautiful trip, especially San Simeon -> Monterey.

I've done SF to home (Orange County) in 4 days, but that's over 100 miles
a day and it's downwind. So I'd budget at least as much time for your
shorter distance. The problem is indeed the stiff northwest sea breeze.
The central CA coast is *windy.* Also, you'll be on the inland side of
the road going north, so your views may be less than perfect.

As Jobst pointed out, the breeze blows from the south before a
winter/spring storm. So there's a chance of a reprieve for a day or two,
but I wouldn't count on it.

But if you don't mind slogging upwind, you should go for it while you have
the chance.

Personally, though I'll climb anything, I hate riding upwind.
