caffiene - good or bad before a workout?

Iv heard it depends on what exercise is involved, sprinting, short burst of energy ,caffiene maybe of benifit.I couldnt belive all the **** that went down when footballers metioned caffine tabs. What ever floats your boat, if its leagal, is what i say.

Ditto. Espresso, yes.

Red Bull? Whatever.
I guess I should also mention that I work at Starbucks. Espresso is the reason I will get up at 4:30am to go to work! However, the body can only tolerate so many espresso shots. Believe me, I couldn't believe it either. My max happens to be around 4. After that I turn to diet coke or sugar-free red bull to get me through the rest of the day!

I like what I am hearing about the use of caffiene by athletes during the day. It appears that most of you prefer coffee over caffienated cola beverage. Do you think that the carbonation in these beverages could have detrimental effects on performance? I throw this out there because I sometimes find that I feel full (a slight feeling of indigestion) after drinking a diet coke.

I feel like an addict and hate to admit this, but at 4 am my alarm goes off and I take a 200 mg caffiene pill and lay in bed until it kicks in. Then I go train.

I should just get an IV drip and set it to a timer. :)
That is a little F-ed up!

Where do you ride in Atlanta?

I just started riding about 3 weeks ago but am familiar with all those places from a running club I use from time to time. Haven't yet been to the Silver Comet or Bud Plant but I plan to go soon.
Been mostly riding in Dunwoody, Alpharetta/Roswell.

I sent you a PM for a ride this weekend.

I used to live on Roswell Road. Hated that traffic. Be careful out there. Those people are in too big of a hurry to care about anybody on a bike. It's all about them!

Yeah, not a big fan of the big roads. If I leave from home I pretty much have to hit either Old Alabama or Haynes Bridge for a while. It isn't too bad. Nothing like Roswell Road.

A lot of runners I know use defizzed Coke during long-distance runs. I usually drink some, plus pop a NoDoz or two before TTs. I don't know if it helps my performance any, but it prevents me from falling asleep during the races. (For some perverted reason these races are always held in the early morning, and I'm used to sleeping until noon!)

Yep, I don't think they asked any of the competitors for their opinion on early morning races. I think a poll would demonstrate that late morning or afternoon races would be much preferred over races that start before the sun comes up. Who can actually get in bed before midnight anyway?!?!? :)

I have never heard of that. I have seen people eat honey packets instead of gel, which I really don't get anyway. Yeah I know it is for the sugar, but god damn that is disgusting.

I'd agree with Velo. I think caffeine is a bad idea. It constricts the blood vessels and blood flow. If you do like it, however, espresso and the like is fine, but STAY AWAY FROM RED BULL!! I can't say enough how shitty that is for you. It's like a liquid heart attack. All those 'energy drinks' aren't energy drinks at all!! They give you the false perception that you have more energy by boosting your heart rate. REAL ENERGY comes from food, not a chemical like caffeine or taurine.

There's a reason why you aren't supposed to have more than two a day.
