Cateye's design and reliabiilty is very good and their support is
unmatched in my experience - if anything goes wrong and it's their
fault, you're gonna get a free replacement on the way that day, no
problem. And as a company they're pretty notable for not doing stupid
stuff, which is rare.

The odometer is settable. It also has a second trip meter and a pace arrow.
The only thing missing on the Strada Cadence vs. the Astrale 8 is the
ability to switch the top display to cadence. I can live without that, I
think.

The REAL disadvantage of the Strada is that none of the shops around here
carry it, and most of the staff are too brain-dead to know if they can
order it for me.

Ah well. I think I'll have to get it shipped.

Every major distributor has them. Go to your bikeshop and ask for who does
the buying. If the counter folks are not helping, the buyer should. They may
ask you to prepay and then wait a bit. That way your piece can go in along
with a larger order without it being a real big hit on the shipping costs.

Nashbar has free shipping through 8/13. $35.95 for the Cateye Strada
cadence computer and $32.95 for the Astrale 8 cadence computer.

Huh? Cateye 2007 Strada series has shipping from several distributors
since early May. I don't believe much is available in 2006 Cateye anyway
now. Yes Cateye is the reliable choice IMHO.

Huh? Cateye 2007 Strada series has shipping from several distributors
since early May. I don't believe much is available in 2006 Cateye anyway
now. Yes Cateye is the reliable choice IMHO.

I should mention that "around here" is Calgary, Canada. Availability seems
to be quite a bit more limited here, despite a population of over a million.

Well, I just ordered a pair of them from the LBS. If the distributor has
them, I'll have one installed on my bike and one on my wife's by the end
of next week.

I have the Astrale, and like everything about it except that I cannot
pre-set odometer. I like the way Cateye allows auto-start or not...
not meaning that all time, including stops, counts in the calculation
of average speed.

stupid. The LBS said that they didn't put any into their fall order, so
the earliest they can get them in is December, and they don't know how
much it's going to cost. Does Cateye not release stuff in Canada at the
same time, or is the distributor just idiotic? I don't know, but I've had
it--I'm ordering from Nashbar, and will suck up the customs and shipping
charges. It's still probably going to be cheaper than buying locally.
(As a comparison, the Astrale 8 sells locally for $60, or $57USD.)

This is silly and pathetic. Why is it so damned difficult to buy stuff
in Canada? As I get older, things just get worse.

morons or folks who've had their hands tied by the moron in charge.
They can pick up the phone and get you one. It's really that simple;
it doesn't matter that you're in Canada. That they didn't get any on
their big fall order is totally irrelevant. Shops do have to think
about things like minimum orders and either making the freight
worthwhile for them or having you pay it, but that's not a big deal
for a shop with their stuff together.

Huh... I was just assuming that wouldn't be the case, since in the US,
Cateye is probably the most commonly carried brand I can think of,
after Park, and some of the distributors that carry it do all of North
America. My bad though apparently.

Do you have an internal line on these? I searched their website for cateye,
strada, strada cadence, cc-rd200, and a number of other things. It just
ain't there, that I can find.

All of which is of course moot, since as I said, I ordered from Nashbar.

I got a friendly email from the folks at Cycles Lambert the other day.
Turns out there was a bug on their website, and the Strada Cadence was
listed as a 'model variant' of the Astrale 8. This effectively made it
invisible to searching, which is probably why none of the LBS people
could find it.

So the take-home message here is that the Strada Cadence IS available in
Canada, it IS in stock, and has a list price of $57.99cdn. (rather high
vs. the US list price of $45, but well...)
