You might consider the Hadrians Cycle route for the return journey and stop at Bowness upon Solway after setting off from South Shields. It's a nice short crossing (about 100 miles) and you can turn back for Carlisle once you've reached the coast.
.... and another alternative route back (just to keep them coming), would be the Walney to Wear (http://www.cyclingw2w.info/). It doesn't directly connect to the west coast side of the C2C, but there is apparently a mapped & signed route connecting the two. I've not actually done the W2W myself you understand, but keep meaning to (in combination with the C2C). -- These opinions might not even be mine ... Let alone connected with my employer ...

Ah but Alistair, the Walney to Wear has a long drag up to the Tan Hill that crushes the spirits and once past Barnard Castle, assuming an East - West crossing, passes through some grim areas that were ex-mining areas. As a chap from County Durham, I was gob smacked by the grimness of the territory less than 15 miles from my home town of Darlington. Having said that, it's not a bad ride and in many respects, more scenic than the C2C.
