Food TV is gone from my subscription. I don't think I will
miss it. From now on I will have to check their web sites
and look for recipes.

Well at least it's not like divorcing your wife. Later on if you do miss the
Food Channel, you can simply make a call, and have it back on your set in
minutes. Maybe after 6 months or so, they'll have some new stuff you will
want to look at.

Perhaps one day they'll put those shows on POD cast. That would be cool.

I don't blame you. I can't justify to myself the cost
of those channels. Having said that, I have DVR which
is plenty expensive itself but I'm hooked now, forget getting
rid of it. (DVR is similar to Tivo) All the channels and a lot
more come with it, except the premium movie channels.

I know just what you mean. I do enjoy their newer shows,
Recipe for Success and the restaurant one. I don't watch
the channel as much as I used to, I can pretty much lipsinc
the shows they have on.

And when I feel like just turning on FoodTV for something
to watch, it's either Emeril Live or the idiot show ... I mean,
Iron Chef. (sorry, I know people like that show, I don't
get it)

The only time I watch any FoodTV anymore is for Alton Brown. That's it. As
far as I am concerned the rest is just [censored]. I am utterly sick of eating
shows as opposed to cooking shows. And so much of it now is nothing more
than advertisements for specialty food makers. Who cares how good something
is when the recipe is a "top secret" and if you want to try it you have to
buy it instead of being able to make it yourself? And then there are the
endless, and I mean endless, candy shows. "The history of the Mars Bar"
"Salt Water Taffy Chronicles" "Skittles - The Inside Story." (made up
titles but it makes no difference.)

And if I see that hyperactive hummingbird, Rachel Ray, spinning around like
a Tasmanian devil on speed with that Cheshire cat grin on her mug and that
heavily exaggerated Fall River twang one more time I just may get rid of my
TV.

with Dish, you get the foodnetwork channel.

Although we've talked about changing from Dish to Direct, I really can't see
much difference in price for the same programming.
But if you change, you do get some free things.

What gets me about Dish is that they never offer a steady customer any
'deals' to stay with them. Too bad there's only Dish and Direct (unless you
want to go to something even more expensive).

I'd indebt myself for life if they'd offer me a deal on some free equipment
and putting more outlets in for less than my life's savings. Stupid of them,
I think.

Yep. Rachel eating, programs about restaurants etc. It seemed that half the time
i flipped on Food TV it was Wrapped, showing how some sort of junk food is

Not mine. There are lots of different options. There were several package deals
that would have included it as one of the more popular channels, but the line-up
was missing too many of the channels that I really enjoyed. After two days of
missing some of my favourites I called the satellite company and went for the
"essentials" which included Canadian networks right across the country, 2
channels of each of the major US networks and 7 bundles, each with 5 or 6
channels.

Maybe the trick is to me only as competitive as you need to be in order to trick
people into thinking you really are cheaper. When I initially got satellite I
had to pay for the receiver and installation, and because of the huge trees at
the front and across the road they had to run the cable a long way and put it
underground. Switching was cheaper. Installation was free and the new receiver
was free, plus $50 credit and credit for 10 free pay per view movies.

Call them up and tell them you are switching. When I called to cancel they
offered me three months for half price.

I haven't regularly watched FoodTV in ages. I'll watch Alton Brown now and
then along with some others. Paula Deen is a favorite just 'cause I like
her. Mostly I would not miss it. Like you; I would hit the website.

I'd indebt myself for life if they'd offer me a deal on some free equipment

I have DirecTV, and had a guy at my house Saturday to move my dish from
one spot to another on the roof - he informed me that in the near
future (don't know if that means weeks, months or years), DTV will
REQUIRE that every receiver have a phone line connected all the time.
Well, folks, there is no way to run a phone line to my TV setup. He
said there was a wireless outlet option for setups like mine. Still, I
don't know why they would require it - seems to me when I ask for a
programming change, they can make it remotely. I never order PPV. He
said the requirement was for video on demand and other "services."
We'll see how far they get with that.

You may be able to download shows via Bittorrant if you have broadband
access and a decent amount of unused hard disk space.

Actually in my area, both Direct and Dish require this. A few years ago when
I had Direct, I wanted to add a sports package, and the nerd on the phone
said they couldn't give me any programming changes because I didn't have a
phone line connected. Sooo, I hung up, ran and extension to the set and
called again and got the service turned on. Then I immediately disconnected
the phone, and guess what.... it still worked. (until I dumped them to go to
Dish because THEY gave me two receivers, two rooms and an DVR with similar
programs for about $5 less per month.

When Dish installed, they required a phone line, which I did with the
electrical outlet plug in deal. That works really well without having to run
lines. (But don't try it for a dial up on your computer. You will drop
connect speed in half or more)

That may be the answer. I have a high speed connection and loads of hard
disk space. Heck , I could download two shows and watch them 5 or 6 times
per week and it would be almost like subscribing to Food TV. :-)

Is the US Food TV much different. Food TV Canada seems to be mostly
redoing restaurants, Ramsey's kitchen horrors, Rachel eating in
restaurants, mass production of junk foods, oldies restaurants, that
idiotic Iron Chef. The only one worth watching is Barefoot Contessa, and
her idiotic chuckle reminds me of my obnoxious big niece.

ONE TV has reruns of The Urban Peasant. The guy is a riot to watch as he
bumbles around the kitchen and makes a mess of everything he touches, but
he makes lots of tasty, simple dishes. Rachel Ray makes a big deal about
doing a 30 minute meal. This guy can make several different meals in half
the time.

My new satellite receiver came with one of those little plug in dual jacks so
that you can connect to the phone line without losing the local phone jack. If
that doesn't do it for you, it is not much of a job to get a new jack and some
telephone line and splice into the closest jack. Just match the coloured wires.

I just went thru that with them and told them if that be the case good bye
to DirecTV. I've been a customer in 3 states over the last 12 years. I have
never once purchase a PPV program and only get HBO for a premium. I also
have 3 receivers 1 of which is HD with Tivo and no wired phone service in my
place. I have direcway for internets (now hughes net) which also doesn't
require a wired phone. The only problem I had with them was over an old box
that I connected to my computer's Win Media Center's TV receiver. They
wanted me to buy a new box, but I still had one that I wasn't using. They
wound up activating it but I had to speak to a supervisor.

I could never have a TV service that didn't have the Food Network.I am
simply addicted to cooking shows, good or bad!!!!
My favorites currently are Paula's Home Cooking, Sara's Secrets, Emeril
Live, Essence of Emeril, BBQ with Bobby Flay, Food 911,Easy
Entertaining, and Barefoot Contessa.
And of course, I often watch Semi-Homemade when I need a good laugh!
And I miss Two Fat Ladies, and Too Hot Tamales.
