BV 4pagers in The Age

The only thing I didn't like about the lift out was that it highlighted what laws were applicable to bike riders, but made no mention of what obligations motorists have to bike riders. Since so many motorists read these papers, I think it was a bit of a let down.

You must be very naive. You will get absolutely no sympathy for that
attitude from various [censored] in this newsgroup. They take the
motorist side everytime and yet they claim to ride bicycles.

Whilst obviously they could have added all kinds of content and laws
(Yes it would have been great to see the 'Share the Road' stuff in there!) Something is better than nothing!!!!!!!!!!
Apparently its a series of 4. Age did it with advice/legwork from BV.

PS first time I have seen anything nearing official advice NOT to wear headphones whilst riding (and no, of course they didnt mention joggers/walkers doing same 🙄 )

Hmmm, now that I think of it, I AM being naive. I should know by now that motorists have no obligations to cyclists. Road rules are no subsitute for a steel cage!

i have a "nice" little ride south along prospect road in the mornings,
only to find lots of vehicles parked in the "bicycle lane".

i wonder if this is one of those ob-li-ga-tions of which you speak.

i have been considering getting printed a run of stickers on heavy
safety orange vynal, about 6 inches a side.
sung to the tune by denis leary, "[censored]";

i'm an [censored], i'm an [censored],
i park quite a lot, in the bicycle lane,
while cyclists behind me are going insane,
i'm an [censored], i'm an [censored] ...

place it over the keyhole and the door handle.
some days i feel like getting a can of whipcream and bring new meaning
to window dressing.

I thought I'd seen all the arguments.. but I don't recall this one.
That's tops! I crank my system in the car (fully sick subwoofer
mate!) but don't often ride with tunes on because I feel better
without headphones on in traffic. I guess I use my ears a lot
more whilst on the bike. "sounds like a vb commodore.. better
get the birdy ready.." :-)

Guess you could get them photocopied onto heavier stock.
Contact BV and/or the Age. Bt like I said, ALL these maps were sourced/done-in-conjunction-with BV and the railtrail org's originally...

I often ride with my iPod. Apple earbuds let in so much noise that I haven't noticed any decreased awareness of surrounding traffic (I haven't been hit by anything either). I do use a Zefal rearview mirror.

Duh!!!

Mirrors, a steel cage and the fact that you generally don't get passed by cars doing 20-30kmh more than you when you're in a car.

Ride with headphones for a year on the road and then come back here and tell us about it. Somehow, I don't think you'll be able to...

I did, & here I am.

Well, it's actually 13yrs of commuting (even though the last 5yrs have been mostly off-the-road bike path generally).

Thanks. I haven't managed to get the Age once this week, and have only seen Thursday's, which was railtrails. What was in Wednesday's?

I hadn't looked around the BV site before - there's a good range of maps there, but they're only really schematic. I know from experience how hard some of the city bike paths are to follow - many sections are not at all obvious, especially at connecting points. I assume the maps in the Age make it possible to ride them without having to repeatedly retrace your steps, as is normal on most peoples' first attempts.

The BV site also alerted me to Melway map 592, which I've somehow never noticed before. It's a cleaned up version of those on the VicRoads site. So thanks again for that.

I'm interested in all this because I know how good Melbourne's bike path network is, but think it's a shame that 99% of potential users have no idea about it. I know the die-hard cyclists, such as many of us on this group, use them, but countless people I've met have only ever ridden a short section of one trail, once or twice, without realising they could just as easily ride other nice places, or longer distances.
