Buying maps from ign.fr

I've done it quite satisfactorily in terms of getting the maps and being
charged but I remember that operation of website was not easy. I was
using Opera. However, I've just returned to the site and cannot get past
validation either. So I guess it's broken now.

I'm using Opera and if I turn off Norton Security it works, try turning off
your firewall for a second and see if that works.

You don't block cookies, by any chance? If so it might be worth while to
try accepting them from the IGN site.

Thanks all for the answers but i finally succeeded from work today. 4
CDs work of the finest French 25k mapping are winging their way to me as
I type this. Or possibly not :-) If they are then the IGN really do
put on a much better show than our OS, I don't believe you get a
quarter as much ground cover for the price here as you do there.

Anyway I'll let you know what happens and what the software's like when
they arrive.

Nope - but I've been meaning to ask for a while,
I have an IGN map of the Chamonix area which I wanted to scan and
geo-reference to plan future walks. What is the French grid system
called? I can't make head nor tale of how it relates to the many
possibilities & I can't read any reference to it in the legend.

The current 25k series uses UTM/WGS84 but the IGN 50k maps of the
Pyrenees uses (I believe) Lambert though I've been told that there are
UTM grid crosses on this series as well. I don't know what other French
50k maps use. Basically if you want to IGN maps with a GPS then go for
the 25k series marked "Compatible GPS" on the cover.

When it comes to the grid and datum that they use on their 1:25,000 GPS
compatible maps, I think you'll find that they're the ones who are
conforming to international standards <g>.
