Buying a house (not OT)

just scored win a little while ago

friends had 2 cars. Subie and an Echo. He used the car, but mainly to get to tram

i showed him the racv running costs ]racv running costs site[/URL] (which are conservative BTW!)

and comapred that with buying a folding bike (he was already putting out for the PT ticket...).
So after 2-3mths he's ahead!
(and that's not inclusing the Gym membership he 'gets' for free 😄)
and healthier
and booking an OS trip to the friggin TdF!@$#!

I did mention getting a folding bike (mmmm... Brompton, yum) and doing the
bike/train/bike thing and I wasn't shot down in flames instantly but got a

I work in East Perth. Especially in the afternoon when I ride home along the river, I see kayaks going the same way I am. "Hmmm, do you think I should paddle or pedal to work today, dear?"

Not quite. This is Ferndale on the Canning River (makes for a much more
scenic/laid back paddle). I've heard it said that it's not a good suburb,
but the bit I saw looked fine to me.

A 15km bike ride to work I can handle, a similar distance in a canoe plus

You're pretty much my neighbor then. I'm just around the corner in
Thornlie.

Its an ok suburb surrounded by better suburbs - often a good sign from
an investment point of view. Hopefully Ferndale will benefit from some
of the same gentrification that has been pushing up prices in Langford
over the last couple of years.

I'm getting flashbacks of that funny beer ad with all the stock broker
types carrying canoes around the place. :-)

easy. Make a small rack with some wheels, and carry it inside the

My wife and I have been house-hunting lately too. Not ever likely to
buy at this rate but every interesting house my wife insists on driving
from their to my work to see what the road conditions and bike
lane/trails are like. Then she gets out the CBR cycling map and checks
out alternate routes.

I love my wife !

Good stuff. People will give you lots of advice. Only advice I can give you is to be 100% sure about the place you buy. We made the mistake of buying a brand new house in a new McF*ckwit estate and ended up regretting it like you wouldn't believe. We sold (and lost a packet of money) after just 10 months... not something you want to do on a regular basis.

We were luckier than that. We wanted to get out of the city a bit and bought
two hectares in Maryville Downs, Lower Chittering in 1999 for $62,500.
Blocks are being advertised here now for $205,000 that are nowhere near as
good as ours.

Scarily close to the truth! The bit of water the sales guy told us was the
Canning river, which I was a bit dubious about, turns out to be a billabong
(so I suppose it was the river *once*). A quick check on Google Earth last
night confirmed it, followed by getting up stupidly early this morning and
walking around the area to see how far it was to the river. It's not
massively far, but the price of the house is more in line with a riverside
one. The property is a bit on the tiny side and this "new reality" has
tipped the balance against it. So it was a bit of a dream and yes, I was
late for work 🙂

She had her first decent bike ride the other week, about 20km, so she's
