Buying a bike in York

maintenance, comfortable, skirt-tolerant and take shopping etc. well)
Dutch bikes, though you'd need to up the budget for one of those.

The LBSs aren't in the city centre area (probably because it would be way
too expensive for them there). York Cycleworks, Cycle Heaven and Bob
Trotter are the LBSs I know of in the city, the latter one is where i take
my bike when required, mainly because it's the closest one to my house.

Never been there myself either, but they supplied me with my Dutch bike
mail order. Sound bunch, unlikely to sell anyone a POS. They have
offerings well below the price of Dutch bikes.

As other's have said, Cycle Heaven (Bishopthorpe Road) or York Cycleworks
(Walmgate).

To see some cyclists, try wandering down the riverside path to the Millenium
Bridge on a morning.

If you know what you are looking for in a bike, pop along to Knavesmire
this Saturday and bid in the CTC York Rally cycle auction starting at
14:30. Last year I got a very nice Holdsworth tourer for my daughter
and a nice Walvale custom build with Campag groupset for myself for £60
the pair. I will be back on Saturday for a couple more bikes for the
family.

I bought my Gazelle from Cycle Heaven a year and a bit ago. Highly
recommended, both the shop and the bike. Loads of other bikes available
too, and as far as I could see, not a BSO in sight.

Thanks for all for their advice.

As I can't be there this weekend (live in Essex, myself), I've pointed her
in the direction of the CTC show, with instructions to spend some time at
the trade show, working out what's right for her (she wants the bike for
weekend undemanding leisure rides and fair weather commuting from Rawcliffe
to the city centre), before the auction. If she ends up with nothing on the
day then I'm visitng the next week to do the LBS's with her.
