I'm pretty sure hornets are a kind (or several kinds) of wasp(s). IIRC
the term wasp applies to a bee-like insect that doesn't make honey or
wax and has a stinger that can be re-used. I could be wrong though.

    Here's some definitions:

Wasp: any of numerous social or solitary winged insects (especially
families Sphecidae and Vespidae) of the order Hymenoptera that usually
have a slender smooth body with the abdomen attached by a narrow stalk,
well-developed wings, biting mouthparts, and in the females and workers
an often formidable sting, and that are largely carnivorous

Hornet: Any of various large stinging wasps of the family Vespidae,
chiefly of the genera Vespa and Vespula, that characteristically build
    large papery nests.

I actually had one of those (or similar) giant hornets land on my tire
once when my wife and I were stopped on the trail. It was a frickin'
monster! It didn't want to leave, so the Mrs mounted up and rode ahead.
I waited until she was a safe distance away and gave the thing a hard
flick and rode like hell away. It didn't catch me. Not sure if it tried.

    Matt
