  1. Hi,

Does anybody know what's going on? after running 18m on Monday then 5-10-5
and yesterday I was doing another 9. I felt a pain in my right leg so had to
stop. The pain is approx 7cm from the ankle on the front side, I think the
bone is called tibia. The bone itself doesn't hurt. I thought it was shin
splints but it seems to be some tendon problem I think, it doesn't feel like
muscle problem and it's very localised pain.

The funny thing is it make like a creaking noise when I put some pressure on
the pain area and move my foot backwards and forwards. It doesn't feel like
muscle pain although I never had shin splints and don't know what it feels
like. The area is little bit swollen as well. Does anybody know what the
problem is and what's the best cure?

    Thanks,

    Panos.

Sounds very much what I've just more-or-less recovered from (although I
wasn't aware of any creaking noises). My GP said it was tendon-related, just
a strain rather than any actual breakage which would, apparently, be
complete agony. The bad news is that (according to the GP) there's very
little you can do to get it healed other than stop running until it feels
    better!

Which is what I did; and after nearly six weeks off I've started again with
some minor discomfort from the area concerned but nothing worse than that,
managed 7 miles yesterday after a couple of gentle 4 milers to test it out,
so I'm pretty hopeful of getting round the Southend 10K next week in
something like my usual time (42 mins).

After going to the GP I meant to go to a sports injury place to get a 2nd
opinion, but my local one chose that very week to go out of business :-(

Yeah right, like any priest would touch a woman, NOT EVEN if she was
    under 10YO.

This sounds exaclty like what I had, creaking sounds as well. Turned out to
be tibialis anterior tendonitis. What brought it on for me was lots of
downhill running on asphalt while I was training for the Boston Marathon. I
had to stop running completely. Even walking was painful. After 2 weeks
with still no running, I finally went to the doctor. He prescribed a 6-day
dosage of Prenisone and 800 mg tablets of Ibuprofin. I also iced several
times per day and used "The Stick" to massage the anterior tibialis muscles
(still do daily). That seemed to get the swelling and pain down so that I
could at least run Boston, with about 10 miles total running for the month.

That's what I was going to suggest to Panos, it might be a rupture of
the ligament rather than a tendinitis since it is so focussed.

The way to test for a tendinitis is to try and raise the foot against
resistance, if the pain is there on this then it is likely to be a
tendinitis. Unfortunately tendons and ligaments are poorly supplied with
    blood and heal slowly.

I wonder, during a bout of achilles tendinitis many years ago heal lifts
helped to effect a cure. So a lift under the forefoot might help
    alleviate anterior tendinitis.

As a chronic sufferer from shin splints Panos's description certainly
doesn't sound like he has them.

You got a boo-boo, now buck up.

  8. Thank you for this very useful. The pain is actually 7 cm above the ankle,
not below, sorry for the inaccurate description. I think I am going to see
the doctor tomorrow cause I only have 6 weeks for the marathon and need the
speediest recovery. Will let you know what's the diagnosis.

    Cheers,

    Panos.
