On that basis, this place would hardly be worth burgling, the only
moderately new item is the TV, and they are cheap enough these days.
Everything else here varies from moderately old to antiquated. They are
welcome to my printer, which is a heap of junk.

It's not the big stuff they go for but small stuff that they can pass on
with relative ease; Playstation games, cameras and the like. Big stuff
like tellys are too hard to get out the window.

I've setup a motion detect web-cam at home with alerting and the like...
thing is.. If I had of caught images of the [censored] who broke in and
stole our stuff last year, I'd be double taking at everyone I ever saw who
looked anything like these bas^ards.

Having contents insurance has saved me from being one very very very angry
person who would forever be seeking revenge..

Thief waits appropriate tie for previous loot to get replaced by insurance, and is assured of some repeat business.

Yep, I had a phone stolen out of the car when I was at a barbecue a while back. Funny thing was that among the 'barbecuers' were bigwigs from WA Police, ASIO, Customs, Fed Police, and just about every other organisation that has a rough tough crime fightin' role in Perth.

Soon after, I was telling the sad tale to a senior policeman on a committee I used to sit on, and lamenting that the crime was committed within about 50 metres of the assembled 'crime fighters'. He asked whether I wanted my phone back. And offered to give me a list of the 5 pubs/clubs where most stolen phones were sold. (I already had a new one so I declined)

My experience is the cars only get broken into when some idiot leaves something in plain sight. Then every car nearby gets hit as well.
You'd think this grouping would know better.

Oldish computer (486 is sufficent for one cam), largish hard disk, video
capture card, plus old video cam or one of the security cameras.

Either just set it to take a picture every minute in the hope of
catching something that allows the police to identify the burgular.

Or In Linux, you run a program like Motion that take another picture
when ever a percentage change in the picture occurs.

And make sure you have your drivers licence engraved into everything.
Conspicious or obscure, along with a list of everything and where you
engraved it.

One day constable plod just might visit said burgular or recipient of
stolen goods and find your drivers licence number, which causes them to
just check it out. I'm surprised at the number of burgulars who are now
reported as being caught when police inspect their residence and find a
pile of stolen goods in storage.

No, phone was not visible from outside the vehicle. Nothing else of value was visible either. We never leave anything of value visible in our cars but we have been broken into 5 times in 15 years of living in Perth.

And the sum total of the proceeds of those break-ins? 1 phone and maybe $10 in loose change.

Hardly a reasonable return for the time.
