confession time. i did an extra 10k after we split
(mainly to avoid getting 'the list' from 'her-indoors'😄 )

That top speed is 'goin down' this Sunday but dont let that scare you off, its only one hill and the rest is VERY pedestrian paced. Just me/tony being 'puppyish'

    PS wots the forecast?

  4. What time do you guys finish up normally? I'm still considering the coffee offer if you're interested, but it'd have to be sometime in the morning still... And it would involve one more hill!

we are normally back by 10-10:30. and dont worry, there are plenty of places where you can gain some good speed, and also some places where you gain very little, espeially when youb have not had the mostnutritious food the night before and you spend time walking...........not that it happened to me :p

Ok see you there. BTW I just did a test run of tomorrow's
ride (motorised two wheel transport) and wish I hadn't seen
the hills on the Warrandyte route! Why can't my 39T ring be
    in before next week.

  12. Who will be meeting at the bust stop on Williamsons Road (on the corner of doncaster road, outside Shoppingtown) at 7:20 tomorrow morning? who will join in along the way? and at which point will you join in?

  13. Most probably down Harris Gully Hill from Aumanns, that hill nearly matches some of the Toolangi Hills that are sh%%%$se to climb. I'm actually slack and ride Beach Rd Sat and Sun plus a bit of spinning during the week being a vet just trying to keep fit. I start from around Kew Boulevard but live in North Warrandyte, so its bike in back of car job to Kew. Last Sunday, bit of late start 8.00 - 8-30 saw the group going down Harris Gully Road plus a few who stopped at the top who obviously didn't want to be part of the direct action. You could easy do more than 80 km down this hill if you were stupid enough. On the flat, [censored]!, vertical drop, yes!

    Cheers

Which hill is this one? I think we just hit 80kph in
the bunch sprint at the bottom of the tourist road
into Montrose.. Last time I rode it, I couldn't get
much above 60kph due to wind (I hope). hippy

Harris Road Gully Rd. Just after start (you pass a family
orchard w/shop on left. top of hill) There is a 90deg left
turn with a 40kph sign and then a fairly straight descent
for approx a km. bit bumpy neat top which has made me
hesitate (that and what you can see in front of you!).

85kph shall be mine next Sunday!!! A 'lead-out' would be
    even better😉

Not bragging by any means, but I've done 85+ down Reynolds
Road from where it hit Tindals Road, towards Springvale
Road. Can't remember exactly, but 88kph rings a bell. Not a
bad road surface and dead straight - if it's speed you're
after in that area... I was circling around through
Warrandyte from Rongwood and knew the hill, so thought "why
not? I feel the need, the need for speed". Probably not
helpful unless you're heading back to Box Hill like me. Good
    luck with the speed run.

Well, 3:15am.. so my excuse for any [censored] riding tomorrow is
    lack ot sleep and bourbonitis...

I'll TRY and make it to Old Warrandyte Rd around 7.20. If
not, I'll probably do the half again later on.. and then
    some street fixin'!!!

  16. Thanks for the ride guys!

Was a friendly bunch and a nice loop. I forgot to start my HRM
so I didn't register a max speed on that first big hill. Somewhere
along the lines I hit 75kph but that was a different hill.

Some of those uphills were quite challenging and made more so
with the fact that I've forgotten how to change gears and a few
times got stuck too high.. ah well.. ss'ing has gotta have ONE drawback at least! 🙂

Has anyone got ride stats? I've got 3hrs and 25.9kph avg speed
but that's with a big section missing in the middle.

Now I'm just off to have my spine replaced with a pain-free
    one 🙂

Here's my ride stats but I'm sure yours will be very
    different (VERY DIFFERENT)

Avg speed 22kph Slowest speed 7kph (up that last rise on the
Warrandyte climb where you guys waited for me, how far away
could you hear my breathing) Max Heart Rate 176 ( 2 beats
off my highest ever) Days to recover at least 2.

With that I thing I will gracefully retire from the Sunday
ride due to health issues, ie. I'm just not fit enough. I'll
put on the 39T this week and give it another go next week,
startign around 7am so say gday as you go past. Maybe in a
month or so I'll be able to keep up.

Not a bad ride at all. Looks like the number of riders was
up on last week. Having a look at my HRM file, which btw is
not complete as I ran out of storage space at the 77km mark,
I had an avg speed of 25.3. The average is distorted by the
fact I spent about 20mins slowly going around in circles at
Doncaster Shopping Centre until Dave and Tony arrived. Below
are my numbers that I have for the ride minus the going
    around in circles bit.

Duration 2:50:55 Minimum Heart Rate 108 bpm Average Heart
Rate 160 bpm Maximum Heart Rate 188 bpm

Average Speed 26.2 km/h Maximum Speed 74.7 km/h (First Hill)
Second hill 70km/h. Distance 74.4 km

Minimum Cadence 25 rpm Average Cadence 80 rpm Maximum
    Cadence 127 rpm Ascent 840 m

The Distance I rode to the starting point was a touch over
25km. The pinch at the top of the hill where we stopped,
waiting for Dave, was about 200m long and has a avg
    gradient of 12.0%.

Thankfully I also had the Cateye recording the ride which
    ended up being
    100.4km at an avg of 27.3km/h (about 3hrs 40mins).

Hip, I guess since you, flyingdutch, and tonykara were
hammering it down the hills then your max speeds should be a
    bit higher than mine.

    Dave,

Fitness, speed and power will come with time. Getting a base
level of fitness is a long process that does not happen
overnight. It's good to see you are not giving up the ride.
Although this is not the easiest ride to tackle it is
certainly not the hardest. It does not matter if you cannot
keep up with the rest of the ride. What is important is you
complete the goal of covering the distance in a physically
good condition. I do not know what your maximum heart rate
should be but you should not be hitting it whilst doing base
fitness rides. What you need to be doing now is developing a
tolerance to lactic acid concentrations in your muscles by
staying well below your anaerobic threshhold (AT - The point
at which your body can no longer clear the lactic acid from
itself). Which of the top of my head is something like >60%
but <80% of heart rate max. You do need to be working above
the HR at which lactic acid starts to accumilate in your
body (LT). Over time you'll find you will be able to sustain
a higher power output at higher heart rate for longer
without the feeling of having lead in your legs and you'll
feel better at the end of the ride. You don't want to be
going Anaerobic if you can help it as you will not be able
to maintain this level for very long at all. You want to be
build your endurance base. This info from me is pretty basic
in nature so it may be worthwhile you checking out some of
the info available on the web regarding the subject to get a
better idea of the theory involved.

I don't really know your riding history but you might want
to look at giving the hilly rides a miss for a few weeks,
opting instead for a longer flatter rides of a managable
distance to start with but gradually increasing the distance
    as the weeks progress.

Regarding the gearing, what is the 39 chainring replacing?
What is the range of your rear cluster?
