Bugs in my Splenda

Lindy,

Call the toll free number if there is one on the package and complain to them. Also look at the
store where you purchased it, it may be kept near dog or cat dry food that has bugs. Be sure to take
it back to the store and get your money back.

I've never had bugs in my Splenda. If I were you, I'd start with the store where you purchased it.
As someone else mentioned, the problem could be coming from storing it near pet food. When I worked
at a store, we often had this problem. The pet food and human food were not on the sales floor
together, but they were stored too close together in the stockroom. The main problem was traced to
some birdseed that came to us full of little worms that managed to squirm out of the bag/box and
then lay eggs in other foods.

Even after moving the pet food, we still had occasional problems. Once we had some old chocolate
with nuts in it and some things hatched out of the nuts, then got into the other food. Flour or
products containing flour or other grains can be a problem as well.

The store will likely give you your money back, but they should also take care of the problem so it
does not occur again. This would involve finding the source of the bugs and removing all infected
items, and also thoroughly cleaning all shelves and fixtures where such food is stored because there
might be some eggs lurking there somewhere.

You should also contact the company that makes Splenda. I'm sure they'd want to know what is
happening with their product.

To me the big question is; what are these bugs eating in the Splenda? Splenda is a not-nutritive
sweetener, with almost no nutrient value. It would seem to me that these bugs would have to eat an
awful lot of the stuff to grow and thrive.

I think I'd be complaining to Splenda., or the store you bought it from.

I'd suggest taking photos of the bugs while they are still in the splenda - make sure the you get
the branding into the shots. Including a ruler in the pics helps so there is an indication of size.
Then email your complaint along with the photos (it's easier to be terrified and disgusted in
writing than over the phone). They may not bother asking you to send it back - just sit back and
wait for the freebies to arrive.

Works with most companies. Not sure about the US, but companies here in the UK tend to get very
apologetic and send you free stuff

No point in trying to work out where it got contaminated - they will probably do that for you. After
all they do not want the FDA crawling all over them or being sued by a couple of thousand people.

Products like Splenda need anti-caking agents to keep them from turning into solid lumps from
the action of atmospheric moisture. The "safest" anti-caking agents for food additives are food
grade carbohydrates. There's not much in there, but it ought to be enough to keep some bugs fed.

Maybe the bugs are trying to reduce their carb intake? Are they T1 or T2? Or perhaps just doing the

Very good advice. Putting it on paper always works better than the phone in a case like this. Not
only that, you won't spend your life on a menu-driven answering service waiting on hold to finally
argue with a 17-year-old "customer service person".

Additionally, it's on the record for future problems. The companies, particularly food companies,
can't ignore that.

Include your phone number so that they can call you if they want to discuss it, instead of the other
way around.

Oh, and include a mention of your disease; usually makes them a little more nervous.

I used to eat Twinkies, and liked them a lot. They must have a lot of nutritive value because they
(and other junk food) got me up to 240. After giving up [censored] like that I'm now down to 150 and
loving it.

Splenda is my favorite sweetener, but I don't think it has enough nutritive value to support life.

Probably starch beetles, the same ones you find in flour, cereal, etc. that's been stored too long.
I had an infestation under framed posters (a drawback of no acid paper). They're probably going
after the carbs in the filler. Small (less than 1/4 inch), black, smaller head than body.

Keep an eye on other starches in your pantry. Switching to sealable containers for a while might be
in order. If you do accidentally ingest a few they're harmless. To see if you have them, mix your
flour, etc. with water. They float.

When I lived in Texas we had those. Had to put all flour and other starchy foods in the freezer for
a few days to kill any life that was in it when we bought it.
