    In summary:

    3 months;
    1162km;
    2 flat tyres;
    1 broken spoke.

    I paid my GVBR[1] entry fee on Friday. I anticipate that the hardest
    part of that ride will be Buchan-Jindabyne, since I'll have to carry
    all my own gear for that bit. ;-)

  2. This morning I decided that I would apply myself a bit more thoroughly
    to the pedals, to see if I could improve on yesterday's time. With no
    wind, I managed a respectable 1:02:05 for the ride in.

    On the way home, I managed 0:57:51, for a total daily time of 1:59:56
    (over 54km). I really put it in over the last few km, when it looked
    like I wasn't going to crack 2 hours! I also achieved my highest ever
    speed on this bike, 53km/h. (I was running out of cadence in top gear,
    and my feet were starting to slip off the pedals.)

    In maintenance news, I had to give the derailler indexing adjuster a
    half turn and pull a little more cable through both brake calipers
    (I've run out of adjustment at the levers).

    Hey, hey! Well done BT!

    Sorry I missed you yesterday (a [censored] day at work and I had to ride
    to Barton to pick up the kids from child-care). I would have loved to
    drag you along a for a bit to improve on your time :-)

    BTW, don't forget to bring your roadie along to ANU for the crit this
    Sunday! :-) I reckon with your current training regime you'd do quite well!

    You can ride it if you like

    I'd give it to you if I could
    But I borrowed it" Pink Floyd

    Well I'd *like* to, but:
    (a) I don't think I could handle the humiliation of being trounced by
    70-year-olds;
    (b) My roadie is much more of a "touring" geometry;
    (c) I've got an enormous backlog of weekend jobs to deal with for the
    next few months.

    Item (c) will become less of a problem as of next month (I'm moving to
    a 4-day work week), but to be perfectly honest I doubt that (a) will
    ever cease to be a problem for me! ;-)

    wrong club, worry about being taken out by 18 year olds.

    You clearly haven't come across our juniors. I'm expecting a trouncing
    from a few 15-16 year olds on Sunday! :-)

    BT, I just took another look at your Budget Cycling page (a little more
    carefully this time) and have only just realised your age. You're
    YOUNGER than me you cheeky little bugger!!! I'm sorry, there are now NO
    excuses... if you don't show up on Sunday with your roadie I'm coming
    after ya!

    According to the web page you are 34 y.o, 180cm (tall presumably!) and
    82kg. I'm 35 and ready for the vets! I only started road/crit racing
    last year (at the tender age of 34) after purchasing my first good
    quality road bike. We'd love to have a REAL Tuggeranong resident as a
    member of the Tuggers Vikings! :-)

    So, in retort to your dot points above:
    (a) I get trounced by people of all ages every race!
    (b) Geometry shouldn't get in the way of having a good time... (umm,
    those with smutty minds just pretend I didn't say that)
    (c) I've got two young kids!

    Come along and have a go if you like. You're more than welcome and there
    will be a "class" for first time riders. I did it last year and had a
    great time. The flow on from this is a training program to help you
    learn a few bunch and crit racing skills. There are a couple of spots
    open in the training program too.

    Give it some thought... it would be great to have you come along to an
    occasional bunch ride!

    En exerpt from my Sunday job list:

    * Mop floors;
    * Wash clothes;
    * Re-pot tomato seedlings;
    * Weed front garden beds (I live on a corner block, BTW);
    * Build star-picket fence post extractor;
    * Refurbish bicycle for work colleague;
    * Finishing touches on repairs to Dad's postie bike;
    * Get hammered on cheap Fijian rum.

    I hope you understand why I didn't put in an appearance at ANU on
    Sunday! ;-)

    At FJD$16 for a 1 litre bottle, I try to wait until the evenings to
    sample the "Bounty".

    (And mix it with a LOT of fruit juice!)

    Which reminds one of a experiment on the weekend just passed. Attempted to rid myself of this never-ending lurgie. Hmmm, cranberry juice. Hmmm blueberry juice. Mixed with Absolut ($40+). Result: felt better for about 20 minutes. Still got the cold though. In retrospect maybe instead I should of got Raspberry Absolut or saved the $40?

    At this time of year it's difficult for me to tell if I'm getting a
    cold or a bout of hayfever. If I wrongly guess hayfever and take
    antihistamines, my hyperactive immune system slacks off and the cold
    lasts twice as long.

    As far as miracle cures for colds go, sorry. :-/
