Can someone give me directions for making brown rice in the microwave? Or does the brand of rice cooker matter? My experiments did not work very well. The MW rice cooker works fine for white rice but has no directions for brown.

Brown rice requires about three times as much cooking time as white rice... I've nuked white rice but not brown... somehow I don't think brown rice will microwave very well.

If you have a rice cooker, try cooking the brown rice in it, using the liquid/rice ratio that appears on the rice package. It's my understanding that the way they work is to measure the amount of the moisture in the pot and to shut off automatically when it's been evaporated. As it will take longer for brown rice to cook, your cooker should factor that additional cooking time in.

I have a 700 watt MW. 2 cups water, pinch of salt, 1 cup rice. bring the water and rice to a boil in the MW and then cook for 32 minutes at half power. Let it sit for 5-10 and it's great.

I fear that I used the wrong words to describe my rice cooking device. This is not a fancy electric cooker, just a plastic dish with two lids that cooks rice in the microwave.

Ah, exactly what I wanted! I'll try it out this morning on an excellent black beans and rice recipe my sister emailed me. Thanks much!

Is it a hard plastic dish that almost looks like a small pressure cooker without a lid? I had one like that made by Viking at one point. It built up pressure to the point it hissed as it steamed the rice. Worked fine but I never saw another one in the store.
If you have one of those, the usual approach of using more water and less rice will work just like in a regular pan.
If the dish is flat, maybe just use a thinner layer of brown rice before adding the water.

That reminds me. Has anyone ever found a way to make brown rice any quicker? What about pre-soaking or something. I much prefer the brown over the white, but I am just not willing to wait for it to cook, and I wont leave any cooking apparatus turned on when someone is not in the house, not even a crock pot. It's just too risky. I sure wish they'd make Minute Brown Rice.

Have you tried a pressure cooker? It's probably not worth purchasing one if that's the only thing you'll do with it, but I find mine invaluable for a host of things. I haven't tried it with rice, however, as I rarely eat rice. -- Donna A pessimist believes all women are bad. An optimist hopes they are.

I think ours are different. Mine has a lid with a hole in the middle, and over that a solid lid that is clamped down by the main pot's handles. I have no idea why two lids.
I tried it at 1:2 rice:water, boil first, and 32 min. at 50% power. The rice was a bit underdone to my taste. But I like soft rice and perhaps the brown doesn't get as soft as I think it should. I noticed yesterday that the rice package says 1:2, boil first, and 45 min at 30% power. I may try that next.

Actually i do have one and never used it. Its missing the little pressure thing that sits on top. I suppose they can be bought. How long would it take, and how do i know how much heat to use so it sont blowup. My mother had one of them blowup once. I was a little kid and i still remember the food all over the ceiling. I got put in bed in the middle of the afternoon. i think mom was real angry. She did use the pressure cooker after that though.

Yes, you can buy spare parts. If you no longer have a manual you might try contacting the manufacturer and see if they have a copy. Many manufacturers today have .pdf files of instruction booklets on their websites.
Each pressure cooker comes with its own set of instructions - that's why most recipes for pressure cooking will tell you to check the owner's manual for specific cooking directions. Having said that, my booklet says to cook brown rice at high power for 15 to 20 minutes, and long grain rice on high power for 5 to 7 minutes.
Today's pressure cookers are much safer than those our mothers and grandmothers used, although they should still be used with care. -- Donna A pessimist believes all women are bad. An optimist hopes they are.
