My first Brooks saddle (on a s/h bike) had a split just in
front of the seat area. Could be quite painful to delicate
areas if I hit a serious bump. Second was a B17, and I never
did break it in - but that was decades before the Internet
with freely available advice.

Yes because either it might not have been used much at all
(so won't be broken in) or it might be broken in to your
shape with a bit of luck.

By coincidence, I just decided to get sell one before
reading your message.......

For sale: Brooks Conquest "All Terrain" black sprung
saddle. Rails a bit twisted but could be bent back,
leather in basically good condition although feels hard.
Front bolt has not been extended much if at all. Suitable
for micro-adjust seatposts. 820 grams. Bought used from
SJSC (you might remember seeing it on their website).
£6.00 including postage.

Don't they get broken in to the particular shape of the
user's buttocks? What are the chances of finding a person
selling a second-hand Brooks saddle who is anatomically

Anyway, from my expereience, I reckon the reputed discomfort
of leather saddles is a bit of a myth - I've had my B17 for
less than 400 miles and I'm already decidedly of the opinion
that it's the most comfortable saddle I've ever sat on.

Probably, yes. It all depends how old the saddle is, how
much use it has had and how well it has been looked after -
you'd have to judge by the individual saddle.

Ideal, I would have thought. Note. This model is less bouncy
than some others, like the B66 for example.

I think so, it's just a bit lop-sided. I didn't detect this
when I tried
it. All I noticed was that the width and firmness didn't
feel right for my not-lardy-enough [censored] :-(

There are indentations at the sit bones area so it has been
broken in somewhat. I don't blame anyone for not being
interested but I thought I might as well advertise before
binning it. I reckon it's at least worth a try for learning
what sort of models might or might not possibly suit if a
fiver* is no great loss. That's why I bought it in the
first place, really. I didn't expect there to be a high
chance of me liking it. Now combined with my knowledge of
some other Brooks, at least I know more about what
width/springs I might choose in future (if I'm ever tempted
by Brooks again).

Doesn't have to be *identical*, especially if either the
saddle hasn't been used much so isn't deformed much yet, or,
at the other end of the spectrum, that it's so soft that it
will comply a bit, like a padded saddle to some extent.

The discomfort I've experienced certainly isn't mythical! On
the other hand, others like yourself are lucky enough to
find they suit straight away....

That might be true for the majority, in fact the majority
of all types of saddles, but a few well-used-but-not-totally-
knackered Brooks do get sold. Some people seem happy with
them. Brooks saddles hold their value well, the name is

I went for a quick couple of miles on it today, and it felt
fantastic, much more comfortable than my old one. I'll do a
longer ride on the weekend and let you know, but it looks
