Oh, I think you know what the danger is. The "danger" is that you might find
extra green stuff in your wallet that you haven't transferred into the
possession of the shoe companies. I almost never buy a "new" shoe, and I will
very rarely buy something that I can't get at a 25-30% discount or more. It's
a lot cheaper to buy the "out of date" last year's "must have" at closeout
prices from outfits like final-score.com or holabird.

a week or two due to the introduction of a new shoe. I'm happy to pay for
the shoe I like and I don't really think the new shoe would be that much
better, but as soon as the new shoe is out, the current one is deeply
discounted.

So - is there an answer to my original question?

Doesn't always work exactly like this unfortunately. For example, I just
picked up some mizunos, and when the new ones were released, the old ones
were only about 20% off, and they sold out very quickly. You'll only get a
really good price if they have a large surplus.

No-one knows. But to your new and improved question, holabird sells your
shoe for $70-, and finishline has an even better price in a size 11 on the
old (IV) model. $70 isn't that bad for a shoe, but not really good enough to
justify stocking up. I'd suggest getting one pair from holabird. Since they
don't have a per-item shipping charge, you may want to get some socks there
too while you're at it (they have excellent prices on socks)

If you really like the current GTS, then it would be infinitely "safer" to
get another pair or two of the current model.

Too many times the shoe companies have ruined perfectly good shoes by
"improving" them or "updating" them in the same way that KFC ruined their
perfectly good Original Recipe chicken by "improving the recipe" to make it
"better", and now I can't stand it. Ditto for Coke, too.

Of course you're right except for the coke. In recent years the price has gone
down considerably, and the purity is up around 98%, unheard of when I used to
snort a few lines as a kid.

Keep in mind that shipping cost also counts. Holabird charge $5- for shipping
regardless of what you order, and they shipped UPS. RRS shipping starts at
around $10 or so and for that I had to settle for USPS.

As for their prices, most of their socks are 30% off or more, and even the
latest models are at least 20% below retail price -- older models being
closed out are cheaper (more like 30-40%).

If you mean footlocker *retail* stores, these places just charge retail, and
then you have to pay tax as well. If you mean footlocker.com, this is the same
store as eastbay.com. footlocker.com/eastbay.com is one of the better sources
for racing flats and spikes, and they sometimes have some reasonable closeout
deals, but for most items holabird has better prices.

Yes, and they're still cheaper than that place by $5 to $10.

I admit I just briefly surfed the site, but most of the shoes were at list
price, while most at Footlocker are AT LEAST 20 to 30 dollars cheaper.

Could you post the models of three pairs of shoes at holabird that they sell at
list price ? I'll post the models of three that are discounted ... the first
three I pull out ... I'll go with Asics ...

Asics Doublecross: 29.95 (retail 45-)
Asics 1090: 57.95 (retail 75)
Asics Creed: 56.95 (retail 110)

Most of the shoes on footlocker are at retail, though there are several
exceptions.

I just bought Brooks Adrenaline GTS (older model) for 49 bucks at
Finshline.com. Excellent deal!
