Just about to head off for London to give a conference presentation this afternoon when I hear that the Tube is out after multiple "electrical" explosions. Thought I'll take the Brompton instead but have just heard a bus bomb has gone off outside Euston. Just trying to work out if even the Brompton will be able to cope with the chaos and whether the conference is continuing.
I guess we were all expecting it to happen some time and it looks like it just has.

Web seems to be behind - the radio has said three bus bombs now, one at Euston. BBC site is giving the electrical story still.
It shows the problems of moving from broadcast to internet news services. As at 9/11 when everyone wants the same information at once, the network cannot cope. For emergency situations broadcast media still has a vital role.

True, though I'd say that it's web rather than internet services which really perform poorly at such times. It's a shame the Beeb doesn't run a more stripped down service at such times. Although they've removed much of the eye candy from the front page in response it's still pitifully slow.

Just phoned to cancel - mainline stations are closed; Paddington trains are ending at Reading; GNER cancelled - and not even a Brompton can deal with that plus Government has now issued a do not travel request.
Not having to listen to me is a minor conselation for those at the conference who are going to have a bad day getting home.

Not when the roads are closed even to pedestrians. I had an interesting time getting to Euston (including being directed the wrong way up a one way street by a policeman :-)

Eh? No, it's [censored] timing. He was all set up for declaring a doubling of aid[1] and the 100% dropping of debt for the poorest countries[2]. This completely overshadows all of that - he left it quite late before he flew down to London. Actually doing some good is more Gordon Brown's cup of tea.

The reported number of deaths has been remarkably low, though still a tragedy for those involved. While I don't think it is an Italian situation I do wonder why this was and if those concerned wanted to maximise casualties and were "unlucky".
