  1. My rear SKS chromoplastic mudguard, only months old, has broken clean
    across.
Retailers say they're "virtually indestructible" - this must be the
manufacturer's / importer's claim. The ones on my old hybrid lasted for
years but the wire stays were fixed on differently: the new one has
plastic clips with a small self-tapping screw that goes through the
mudguard, and that's where the break is.

Has anyone else had this happen, or heard of it?
SKS are German and don't seem to have a website - how can I find out who
the importer is and try to get their viewpoint?

I think it happened when I rode into a puddle that was hiding a pothole
    - I landed with a vicious jar and heard something snap, but as each part
of the mudguard is still attached I didn't find the break for some time.
It's now held together with insulting tape - not very elegant !

I'm not even sure which pothole it was - Sycamore Road offers a choice -
I'll photograph the ugliest and try my luck with Reading Borough
    Council.

Yes, that's exactly what happened to my rear SKS mudguard last year
after I'd only had it a few months. I think road vibration caused a
crack which then spread and it broke right accross the middle. Like
you, I used tape to botch it together, but it then broke again a little
further along. I managed to get hold of a replacement no-brand, cheaper
mudguard which looks identical (black chromoplastic) and it has lasted
much longer. The front SKS guard is still intact so I have a spare
no-brand front guard at the moment as they're sold in pairs. The
material it's made from seems a little thicker than the SKS ones. A
friend said he knew a few other people who had their recently SKS
guards break in the same way. I dont know if this was a just poor
batch, or if the quality of SKS gurads in general is not what it once
was, but I suspect the latter. I think they're too brittle. I got my
cheap no-brand mudguards from my LBS and the one on the bike is holding
up well. You may be able to get something very similar to the SKS
    guards at your LBS too.

I can see it now :-)

"You what? You're using me to tie together a scummy mudguard, you
idiot! How many brain cells do you have?! Don't even think of biting
me, you fool! Ha! call that a fixing!...."
