I had a fun ride today doing the Cycleogical 10 lap Mt Cootha challenge.
Cycleogical are a brisbane shop, and they are a good bunch of guys. There
were about 60 riders, some doing 10 laps, some 5, and some sick freaks doing
1 lap r*n, 3 lap bike. It wasn't too hot early on with a bit of mist on the
mountain top, but it got up around 30 degrees later on. It's a pretty
relaxed event, just a bit of fun and a good personal challenge. I managed to
do 10 laps last year, my aim was just to do the same as I haven't been
training much lately.
I had a 12-25 cassette and I was glad I did ,as I saw lots of people
suffering with 23s and 21s. Slowly there were less and less people riding,
till there were only a couple left. I had planned to climb at around 75-80%
of my maximum heartrate which was around 10-14kph, lower than what I'd do in
a race or ITT but if you cramp up on the hills it's game over. In the end I
could have gone a bit harder as I still had some in the tank on the last lap
which was my fastest my about a minute but I'm lazy. There is one big climb,
then basically it's undulating over the top. Those little pinch climbs are
nothing when you're fresh but they're a right [censored] towards the end
though!
One guy with huge calves came past me on lap 8 up the big 10% climb - I
thought about going with him but didn't want to blow up so just maintained
my hare and the tortoise pace. He finished about 5 minutes ahead of me.
Another guy I was riding with earlier came in a few minutes after me and I
think we may have been the only riders to do 10 laps.
Stats:
3hr51min
93.3km
24.2kph ave speed
Total ascent 2444
Powerade consumed: 5.5L (and I *still* got dehydrated)
Here's a HR/speed/altitude graph.

Anyhow if you are looking for a challenge I'm sure they'll do it again next
year. It boggles my mind how the pros can do huge 240km+ stages in the big
tours and still climb 2 or 3 times faster (mostly without drug cheating).
