On the TV coverage I saw predominantly "Team Fresh" jerseys and some
familiar faces from the Livingwell Gym at Carindale. I hope the
injured heal quickly, and I really hope and pray that Tamyka and her
partner Steven were not involved or injured. TV said the driver
involved stopped and rendered assistance.

I missed the TV news, so I can't add more.

I believe Tam's on an Army week, so don't expect any news from her this week.
I'll see if I can find out more info & keep you posted.

Not far from home for me. I know that stretch of road well and it's used by
most of the northside bunches including the famous Zupps ride. The clown in
the commodore who attempted to pass them through there should be locked up.
It's way too narrow and he must have been either brain dead or making some
kind of road rage inspired point to even attempt it. A sane person would
have held back for the mere 30 secs (if that) before it hits double lanes.

have you read the three comments about the article by what i assume to be [censored] car drivers?
cyclicts are always quick to blame motorists, even if they were wrong blah blah blah lets tax bikes blah blah blah lets enforce new rules to stop bikes inconveniencing cars blah blah blah lets prevent cyclists from using a lane by riding two abreast blah blah blah lycra louts should be banned...

really... i dont know how some of these people got their license. if they cant wait a few seconds for enough room to become available to give a very obvious bunch of cyclists some room (yup, its the law) then they shouldnt be driving. the driver of the car was a f'king idiot, and regardless of wether he stopped to help, he should be charged accordingly for not obeying simple road rules.

Still no news - no answer from Steve & Tam's home number, no response to SMS
message to both Steve & Tam's phones. Lotte's trying Tam's parents now ... I'll

Scott Hayhoe (landed on face, "severe cuts"😉
Jess Hamilton ("injuries to hands & hip"

I came past in the car just after the ambo got there. One poor guy was still
on the roadside, while they were taking precautions for spinal injuries.
Another guy had a broken collarbone. My first thought was for my wife who
was also riding out to to Lakeside and must have passed that way about 10
minutes earlier. I stopped and spoke to one rider but there wasn't anything
I could do. Apparently the commodore clipped one rider in the middle of the
group and brought them all down. All the best for a speedy recovery if any
Teamfresh or friends read this.

It's a dodgy spot too, I went that way this morning - the road is very
chopped up and there are holes and ridges everywhere.

Just got an SMS from Steve:

Tam is away with army and i decided to take the day off. Good decision. I have
just got back from breakfast with the team. A few broken bones and bruises but
nothing too serious thankfully

Did anyone else notice the author of the article was Edmund Burke? Rather ironic, I thought.

For those who may not know, Edmund Burke was also the name of a well known exercise physiologist who wrote a number of papers and published several books on the subject of cycling performance.

'Bourke and Wheels', just recently returned from a big cycling journey -
London - Melbourne or something, I think. Yeah, ironic.

No, another company, Bourke and Wheels. Friends of mine rode the Cape York
Road, and the Gibb River Road across the Kimberley with them. Not sure
whether they are operating any more. They still have a listing here:

for the total input of energy to make and run a bicycle vs the total output of energy in the form of distance/speed/time, the bicycle is the most efficient machine that has ever been invented, and hence the most efficient form of transport that has ever been invented.

i would have thought a cyclist knew this.

I really should know better than to feed the troll but sometimes temptation's too great. Wonder if it will get published.

Registration does not pay for roads, it pays for compulsory third party insurance. Considering that the cost of road trauma to Australia is estimated to be around 17 billion dollars a year, that majority of which comes from car accidents, I'd be surprised if the compulsory third party cover paid by motorists even scratches the surface. To put that in to perspective 17 billion dollars is 2.3% of Australia's GDP.

Federal roads are funded from consolodated revenue. I contribute to consolodated revenue every month when I get paid and a large slice of that pay goes to tax. For that contribution I take up an eigth of the road space that a car takes up and do substantially less damage, in fact natural erosion does more damage to the road than I ever could.

Local roads are paid for by rates and GST. Being a home owner I pay rates. Amazingly enough I buy things with what's left of my pay and contribute to GST.

Motorists breathe in 2 to three times the air pollution that cyclists do. This is because all the nasty stuff is at ground level, right where the air intakes are. Add to that the lack of air ciruclation and dissipation in a car and all the poisons that are already in the car (that's the new car smell everyone's so fond of) and it's hardly surprising.

The UK voted the bicycle the most significant invention in history and with good reason. It is the most efficient means of transport known to man. The case for energy has already been made, let me put it to you in terms of time.

The average car costs $200 per week to run. I pay about $20 per week to run two bikes. Let's say I get paid $1,000 per week. On a forty hour week I've covered my transport costs for the week before I've worked my first hour. If I was running a car one day a week I work covers nothing except my transport costs. To be fair over the course of a week it takes me ten minutes more to get to and from work on the bicycle than it does in a car thanks to peak hour traffic, however that's time I don't have to spend in the gym.

The benefits of active transport far outweigh the risks. By riding to work instead of drving or catching over-subscribed public transport I can expect another fifteen years of active life. What's meant by that is that when I reach 70 I'll still be able to get about under my own steam and not have to be cared for in a nursing home. I'll take the relatively small risk of dying on the road on my bicycle, which is only twice the risk of dying in a car on the road, for that extra fifteen years of useful life in a heartbeat.

All of the above is fact, not opinion, backed up by independant studies.

Cycling is not just a passtime; although it is certainly a sustainable; healthy and enjoyable one; it's a enviromentally sound, sustainable and efficient means of transport.

So Mr Stockburger, who's the one living in fairytale laa laa land now?

Jess is one of the girls I raced with the weekend prior. Brian and
Scott are good mates. It was pretty horrible news when I eventually got
it - I had no mobile comms for the first while.

If anyone read the full article (late edition) you would probably have
been very impressed with Helen's comments, not blaming the driver.
Apparently Steele was also very polite to the driver who was an elderly
man who misjudged (and acted very stupidly) although one of the boys in
the group got very fired up, the others calmed him down. The other
cyclists immediately got into first aid with a minimum of fuss.

Ben Wilson (BQ) commented that they were doing everything right when
cycling, but I'd like to add that I think the way they handled the
accident and following media coverage sets a fine example to groups
everywhere. Fresh came across as a bunch of responsible, intelligent
cyclists, without an "us and them" attitude. I'm proud to be associated
with them.
