Don't know about where you are, but it's been a bit like a warzone
around here tonight! In fact I feel like a bit of a war photographer
after all of tonight's action - listening to the rocket launches, trying
to anticipate where the explosions would occur, good fun. The "sniper"
photography was bloody difficult though, using a 640mm equiv lens, arms
aching after a while and really difficult to anticipate, aim and focus
(auto-focus doesn't work too well in the dark, and a 400mm lens is a
swine to focus manually in the dark).

The official fireworks display at St. Helens rugby/cricket ground was
really good. I arrived there just 10 minutes before the end, thousands
of people on the promenade, hundreds of cars clogging the roadsides, and
I had the audacity to head for small car park right next to the main
event. I expected the police at the entrance to turn me away but their
gaze was fixed on the show and they ignored me as I drove in and double
parked (no-one was going anywhere at that time anyway).

Leapt out of the car, got some good shots of the best fireworks at the
end, felt ill from all the gunpowder smoke I'd been breathing all
evening, leapt back in the car, reversed and away. Last in, first out!
(My sister's family had gone there two hours in advance and probably
took an hour to get back out.)

More shots in the garden later with my brothers' fireworks, including a
couple of one brother launching rockets with his hand (yes, I did advise
against it).

All in all quite a tiring night, and a new record for me, 206 shots in
one day, mostly in a space of 3 hours, that's an average of over 1 a
minute. All taken handheld on the B setting (for maximum aiming and
exposure time flexibility), f5.6 to f36 depending on closeness to the
fireworks. Manual focusing. Loads of experimentation and duff shots.
That's the advantage of digital, with film that lot would have cost me
about £55.

Mine is usually ok, I even took him to a display (in Matlock) once.
Even he was a little nervous tonight though and spent a little more time

I once had a job filming football matches (Swansea). Though I had the
best seat in the house (an aerial gantry) the experience was no more
than average because, a. it was work, and b, one had to view the action
through a small black and white viewfinder.

Like fireworks, you cannot beat the unencumbered experience of just
being there.

b. What makes you think I was looking through the viewfinder? I only
did that to set the focusing. All my shots were taken on the B setting
and were often 10 seconds or so, during which time I just aimed my
camera in the right general direction whilst enjoying the spectacle in
full 3D colour using my MkI eyeballs.

True, I'd probably have enjoyed the fireworks a little more without the
camera...

....but I also enjoy photography, so I'd have enjoyed that aspect less
without the camera. Photography does indeed float my boat, why else
would I do it? Today I not only have the physical memories of last
night in my head, I also have a bunch of cool photos to look at, most of
which (interestingly) look nothing like what I saw with my eyes. You'd
really need to use video to capture fireworks properly, long exposure
stills produce a different effect, quite unlike reality.

Nov 5 is bad enough, I don't mind fireworks, it's the high explosives
that are currently being used that annoy me.

Even Thursday night or rather 00.15 Friday morning it was like WW 3
here.

I presume you mean the loud bangs? Personally I don't see (hear?) the
point in making loud noises for the sake of it (the really loud ones
aren't anything to look at) but clearly some people like them. My
brothers liked the shrieking rockets best. Go figure.

Actually I heard on the news that there's new legislation in force
making it illegal to let fireworks off after midnight. But how many
people are actually aware of that?
