  1. In order to pass the qualitfying examination of the german sport university cologne I have to do
    some swimming.

Well I'm in good shape for the other sports but my swimming is worring me.

I've 18 days left and started my swimming exercises today, I know it's damn late but anyway even if
a have to go swimming twice a day i have to make it.

I bought some goggles and and a water resistant watch?

I've to swim 100m breaststroke in 1:50, that's the limit for . Today's best attempt was something
around 2:00. Now I'm looking for the best strategy to get faster in 14 days. But got no clue about
    drills, etc... etc..

So what can I say about my technique.

I did the 2:00 today without using the starting-block, I've pushed myself of the wall. I got no
proper turn, which means that I used to touch the wall with my right hand, turn around and push off
the wall. Then I do one leg stroke followed by one arm stroke and then break through the surface.

In my opininion i should get some sec with a starting block and with a better turn, because i think
that i should have pretty strong legs (volleyball, basketball player).

I'm not sure about the rules...

    1. do I've to touch the wall with my hand when I do the turn, or is it enough to touch it
    with my feet?

    2. the start: what are the major phases of the start?

I've enough spare time and hopefully enough will power, to do everything i need to get faster then
1:50. I would appreciate any suggestions of how to become a faster swimmer.

Anyway...I wanna go to the Library on monday and look for some books on swimming.

    Please help!

You have to touch with *both hands* at the same time and same level. You should turn and push off in
a powerful flat streamline position just below the surface. Then take one pull ending up with the
hands at the sides and still in streamline position. Finally sneak your hands back up to forward
streamline and execute a kick bringing your head to the surface. Your head must break the surface
before the widest part of this second pull.

    2. the start: what are the major phases of the start?

Stand with your toes just over the edge of the block. Squat down and grab the edges of the block
just outside your feet (or just inside, your preference). Explosively leap straight out in a
horizontal streamline extension and pike very slightly to enter the water with the arms in the
streamline position above the head. Then do the breakout as described above.

Great starts and turns will save you about 3-4 seconds on a 100. You can probably achieve the
remaining 7 seconds you need by increasing your stroke rate and eliminating any gliding phase.
Without seeing your stroke, it's hard to give technique advice. Have a look at the breaststroke
videos at this site and try to emulate what the elites are doing:

Haven't had to be at the same level for some years under FINA rules.

Definitely both hands at the same time though.

do I've to touch with the whole hand or just the fingers? When I touch the wall, let's say at the
surface, where do I put my feet? right under the surface? In which direction are the toes pointing?
Is it right that I turn around after I've executed the kick, when I'm in the streamline position?

Which is the best description of your 2 minute swim?

    A) maintained a steady pace and sprinted at the end,
    B) maintain a steady pace the whole way,
    C) got slower as you went,
    D) got slower as you went and very sloppy at the end?

    Hi Donal,

Answer A would be best, heh ?

well I used to know from my running that it's best to start bit slower and try to get faster and
faster during the race. I've tried to accomplish this in the water too, but because it was my first
day, I've got almost no clue, what's fast and what's slow for me. I think that I've starter to slow,
on the 1st two 25m, the third was faster and the last 25m was very exhausting, I'm not sure if the
4th lane was the fastest one, In my opinion, I should make the 1st two lanes a bit faster and the
3rd a bit slower, and give my best in the 4th? What you think?

Anyway, it think it's gonna be pretty hard to compare lane-times because of the start from the
    starting-block?!

    let's do the math, 4 x 25 in 1:50 = 27,5sec /25m

okay with an avarage of 27,5 sec per lane, let's say the last is a bit faster and the first one a
bit easier (because of the jump off the starting-block)

    1. 28
    2. 28
    3. 27
    4. 26

=1:49 sec? sounds like a good plan?

I'd expect the first and the last to be fastest. Since your opponent is the clock, I'd go for a
steady pace, with a bit of a sprint at the end.

Sloppy breaststroke can be very slow, so I'd avoid swimming that last length exhausted. Find a pace
where you can stay smooth the whole time.

If there is a pace clock, you should be able to grab a look on the turns. Or you could look at your
    own chronometer.

    And work those underwater pulls.

i've checked many videos out, but I coudn't find a single one with a breaststroke turn. If you know
one, please post the link, thanks.

turns and good technique all around.

Any touch of the hand to the wall is legal. It could be one finger but I wouldn't recommend it. :-)

    Quoted message said:

When I touch the wall, let's say at the surface, where do I put my feet? right under the surface?
In which direction are the toes pointing?

You can turn either way; I turn to the left so I'll describe it that way. After the two hands touch,
the momentum of the lower body causes it to continue toward the wall. Pull yours knees up and place
the feet against the wall with the toes pointed to the left. Also, after the touch, the left hand
drops underwater to the streamline position and the right arm recovers over water to join the left
hand as the body drops into the water to push off underwater in a streamline position. A technique
finesse is to forcibly push off the wall with the right arm to rotate the torso and get the feet to
the wall faster, as well as to augment the momentum off the wall.

  13. I'm guessing as Jan simply has to complete 100m BS in 2:00 as an entrance
qualification, he won't have turn judges watching to make sure his hands are
    touching simultaeneously... 🙂
