Breamish Valley Northumberland

Just back from walking the Hillfort Trail in the Breamish Valley. Quite short at 4.5 miles, but strenuous in places. In the 4.5 miles you pass 5 pre-historic hill forts and see other ancient land scape features such as terracing of the hills. Fascinating place plus super views across the Cheviots and Simonmside. The National Park do a leaflet to guide you round. Well worth the effort to get there - no buses sadly, so car needed to take you to the car park just to the west of Ingram used as the start point Roger C

Thanks for the info Roger sounds interesting think I'll have a go at that
next time I'm up that way, might even try and stretch it out a bit if I have
plenty of time.

Breamish is a valley just south of Wooler, I think it has a visitor centre
in a small village called Ingram. Off the top of my head, I think my
mates used to mountain bike from there, follow the River
Breamish to Scotland and back. (I've never had a mountain bike so can't
confirm it!) There's loads of ROW's as this area leads right into the
Cheviots.
"Beamish" is a small village in Durham who has had an outdoor museum,
depicting Victorian life (there's a coal mine, school, shops, pubs...etc....)
As with many things in Northern England there's many names very similar,
many names you can't pronounce correctly ie, Alnwick (pronounced not
aln-wick, but An-ick)

There's a famous engraver called Thomas Bewick, and his surname's pronounced
"Bhew - wick.

Ah now that takes me back some years to when I worked for Northumbrian
Water. Our offices were in Pity Me, I lived in Witton Gilbert (pronounced
Jilbert) and one of my rural sewage works (yes, yes, I know - it may be [censored]
to you but it was my bread and butter) was in Tow Law (pronounced as in
"ow"😉. The first time I went up there on a site visit was in June and I was
told to take a coat in case it snowed. I did, and it did!
Used to get some nice trips out to the water treatment works in Weardale
too. Had to wash me wellies and surveying kit in bleach beforehand though.
By the way, there's a lovely piece for northumbrian smallpipes called
"Breamish".
