If Breaking Away is the greatest cycling movie, something must be terribly
wrong. Which is probably the case, because it's not easy to find a better
one. I would probably vote for "Totò al Giro d'Italia", a killingly funny
comedy. On the other hand, it's impossible to take a list seriously which
gives John Huston's "Escape to Victory" - making a worse sport movie is
impossible - an 11th place and "Fat City" of the same director the 39th.

Sunday in Hell - which I happened to see four days ago (not for the fiirst
time) - might be interesting for cycling fans, but as film it is thirteen in
a dozen. And of course it's very difficult to define what is a sport movie.
Even Lagaan isn't really a sport film - in spite of the fact that they are
playing cricket for two and a half hours or so.

Interesting that Breaking Away and Rollerball (hopefully the original!) sit
next to each other. As a bike racer (sometimes track), Rollerball seemed
like bike racing gone mad. In other words, something you'd only dream could
happen. You'd hear stories about legendary 6-day races and just couldn't
imagine that Rollerball was anything but inspired by them.

Breaking Away though... it was as if somebody was filming my life at the
time. Only I rode a Cinelli, not a Masi.

No, but there was a quick flash of me in Big Halsey and Little Faus or
whatever that stupid movie was that absolutely turned me away from EVER
believing anything a producer or director said.

The starting line shot of the final race in the movie was filmed at Sears
Point and me and Davey Scott were both racing in the 250 class and Davey was
the stand-in for the lead character. Robert Redford looked like some
perfectly normal person and not that girl magnet he looked like on screen.
In fact my doper jailbird late brother was more attractive to girls!
