Brakes for tandem

I have well over thirty thousand miles on my Hayes Disks on
my recumbent single bike. I have ordered disks on our 'bent
tandem, now being built. I think that there advantages in
disks over any rim brake.

How does a mechanical disc on a road bike have advantages
over a rim brake on a road bike?

I think on a tandem, discs are a good idea, on a '1/2 bike',
single bike, whether it be a 'bent' or upright, they are a
costly, complicated brake.

I'm less sure they're a good idea for tandems, given current
technology.

I don't believe any mechanical discs are "tandem rated" and
the greater stress on spokes could be an issue...tandems
already have enough spoke breakage problems.

search engine specific to tandems and you can find maybe a
hundred plus messages specific to your question. The 203 mm
Avid disk is a hot item to have but no better in stopping
the bicycle than a well setup Canti, Direct pull, or Dual
pivot brake.

You will see that it is a very controversial topic.

IMHO the dual pivot with an additional drum brake is the
best, overall braking system for a tandem. The disk brake is
not a drag brake.
