Brake rotor min thickness?

I've spent most of my money on mountain biking and windsurfing.
The rest, I've just wasted.

I read on another NG someone claimed that their rear rotor was very thin and
came apart with razor sharp pieces. I would think that you would have other
problems first like fading and warping.

I have a rear rotor that is a few years old and I used it with the standard
Shimano pads Its about 1.5mm thick. I also have a spare rear wheel that has
only a year old rotor but I used Aztec red(?) disc pads that stop real good
and the rotor is worn to at least to 1.4mm (Using a dial caliper I tried to
measure the thinnest parts). My friends rotor with the red pads is a lot
thinner than mine.

I've worn out a few. My original Hayes rotors didn't make it to 3000 kms
(1870 miles).
Admittedly that was over winter with a lot of racing in the mud[1].
The rotor is very likely to have the minimum thickness printed somewhere on
it, for the Hayes it was 1.52 mm. At this level of wear you can see the
braking surface is much thinner than the rest.

[1] Before anyone gets too upset this mud racing is on dedicated race tracks
with regular maintenance.

My Shimano rotors do not say minimum thickness on them, and I looked at an
Aztec and Avid rotor and no min thickness on them either. I'm surprised this
info is hard to find because it could be a real safety issue with most of
the bikes being sold with disc brakes and the pads getting more abrasive.

Do you know how thick your hayes started out or how thick the unworn part
is? That might give me a reference for how much they should wear.

The print on the Hayes disc was pretty hard to find. It's near the centre
and looks like it's etched on so is easier to see on some angles than
others.

I just had a quick look, I only had a ruler to measure with but I'd say they
are just shy of 2mm on the unworn sections of the disc.
