Brake pads and removing inserts

Um.. try sliding it the OTHER way..
One end wont let the pad out :-)

Try a screwdriver and mind those fingers!

That's what I was afraid of, I've got a bad record for stabbing myself
with screwdrivers, pocket knives etc.

That's what I was afraid of, I've got a bad record for stabbing myself
with screwdrivers, pocket knives etc.

Try hooking the pad over the edge of a bench or vice
and then pulling the pad-holder back by holding onto
the bolt.. No sharp things involved!
They're not usually that stubborn.. what have you
done to it? ;-)

What pads are you putting on? I am looking at replacing my Shimano muck
makers (default pads from 105 that cover the wheels in grey/black gunk
when wet) with some Kool Stop pads, if I can ever find a place that
sells them...

Try sititng the buggers in hot soapy water, Dave

will also come in handy when you stab yourself... 🙄

I needed to replace them in a hurry so just took whatever the LBS had.
Once I've got these on I can work out what I want long term. I was
hoping that moving up from whatever the Tiagra uses to 105 or Ultegra
pads might improve things but given your statement it sounds like the
105 and Tiagra have the same problem or use the same pads.

From what I have quickly read today it looks like all Shimano road pads
are ordinary. I've done about 3500kms with these pads (they came stock)
and only have had an issue when the rims get a little damp, other than
that the stopping power and wear are fine*..

*fine being total [censored] compared to my mtb with discs, but this is the
first roadie I've owned, so I have nothing to compare it to..

You could try the dura-ace pads. I found they were a good improvement over
105.

Flick them around 180 degrees. Find a really long and steep hill. Head
on down. :-)
