  1. I am installing brake blocks/pads. They are circa 1990 shimino cantis, with
a hex bolt. Which way do they go? There are little arrows on the rubber on
one side that either point up in the air or down towards the ground
depending on the brake's orientation. Which way is up?

I don't have the old blocks to check.

    Thanks,

    -Tom

Those are pointing in the direction of rotation IIRC. "Up" could be
    wrong.

There's no way I can install the blocks so that the arrows point in the
direction of rotation. The choices are either up or down. Not front or back.

Correction, I could install the blocks perpendicular to the rim. That would
let me align the pads with the direction of rotation.

Wild guess: install 'em arrows up.

Install them so that under braking forces the pads do not
    shoot out of the blocks.

It's a one piece brake block/pad. It looks like this-

Oh, THOSE crappy things? Shimano pads have never had a great reputation, and
those guys are not their best work. They came stock on the under-the
chainstays U-brakes that were all the rage back then.

I hope you didn't pay much for them, or just had them lying around. Spend
$20-25 and get 2 pairs of Kool-Stop Supra 2 or MTN pads. you'll be amazed at
    the difference.

I remember them well. Absolutely the worst pads I've ever used. If you
resurface them with a palm sander they can be OK, as they probably have
a hard glaze on them at this point in time.

Not under the chainstay U brakes on my bike. Just normally placed circa 1990
    seatstay MTB LX cantilevers.

$7.95 for 2 pairs of NOS. Price includes confusing arrows.

Do you have the data and studies to allow you to make this so-called
    wild guess? ;-)

The arrows should point "up". I'm not speculating or guessing; I have a
pair of those brakes laying around here and I just took a look.

No, but I have a lot of electronic equipment boxes in the garage and the
arrows all point up. Therefore... D'OH!

Inadequate data set for any meaningful extrapolation. (Just because YOURS
    point up...)

I agree with this assessment. I used such pads on my U-brakes back
when I first got U-brakes, and I didn't waste any time replacing them
with Madison Aztecs. Terrible pads, even by the low standards of the
    day.

How do we even know mine point up? Insufficient data and population
studies. How do we know they don't point down sometime? I was a big
supporter of pointing up, before I read the studies.

Installing brake pads isn't dangerous and it is not to our advantage to
    say it is.
