  1. Okay, I've been waiting for a thread for this to come up and rather than wait, I've decided to start it myself. :-)

At this stage, my intention is to come along for this ride depending on how I feel after this Saturday's ride.

Where do we meet again? (I know it's at Doncaster Shopping Town but I'll need to know where exactly) and what's the route? I've spent some time looking for past threads on this but it's taking up too much time (and we all know that time is precious).

    Cheers.

7:20am on the corner of Williamsons and Doncaster Rd. I'll be there,
well at the start anyway (with a 14km run planned on Saturday I'll be
interested to see how long I can almost keep up).

Route is across to Old Warrandyte Rd, up some short hill that really
hurts, then speedo calibration before going down a big hill that would
really hurt if you came off, into Warrandyte, remove excess layers of
clothign at the bus stop, then a 20 min climb to K Ground (trying to
remember that I now have 3 chain rings not 2). Heart rate recovery to
wait for tailenders (ie me) then either Christmas Hills route, Wattle
Glen route or Panton Hill route. Back to Diamond Creek and then down
into Greensborough for another downhill sprint, secret backstreet route
to Greensborough Rd, and final sprint for those inclined. Back streets
to Heidelberg and I ride slowly home while the others usually insanely
    ride up Burgundy St.

    DaveB

hehe. pardon while i fill in the blanks...

Route is along Donc Rd to Old Warrandyte Rd (left). left-and-immediately right acroos Springvale and back onto Old warrandyte Rd, up some short-HARD hill which changes the Rd name to Tyndals as you grovel up past the "Donvale christian primary school (or something like that...), stay left at the next intersection (at top of hill) which keeps you on Tyndal.

Turn right into Harrisons Gully Rd, then speedo calibration (yeah right! Cheats. the lot of you!) before going down a big hill that would really hurt if you came off (begone such thawts!!!), get to roundabout and turn right which is now Yarra St and on into Warrandyte.

Turn left over Bridge. you are now (and will be for quite a way) in Warrandyte-Kangaroo Ground Rd. (remove excess layers of
clothing at the bus stop, then a 20 min climb to K Ground (trying to
remember that I now have 3 chain rings not 2). Heart rate recovery to
wait for tailenders (ie me). This usually happens at the top of the last hard hill (on right big white house and fence with hedge == 'Dove-something?) then roll down to roundabout and turn right toward General Store (closed)and KGrd Primary School (toilets available) then either...
Christmas Hills route (turning right almost immediately and keeping on E-YGRd and down to Dawson's Creek? and left into Alma Rd which brings you back to near Panton Hill)
Wattle Glen route (past primary schoola nd left into KGrd-WGrd) down to HBerg-Kinglake Rd
or Panton Hill route (Past Pschool and on for approx 5km and left intoCherryTree Rd-sign will say Hurstbridge. Takes you to, derr, Hbridge and then stay left and back to HBerg-Kinglake Rd).

All 3 take you back thru the same roundabout in Wattleglen at the corner of
    KGrd-WGrd and HBerg-Kinglake Rd.
Turn left-South and go on for a way until you cross the railway line. You are now on Chute St. Naaasttteeee little hill takes up onto Main St.
Go to bottom of hill and turn right. Youre now on D-Creek Rd.
Stick on it for the next 3-5km until you get to a big 2lane roundabout. We sweep down left (another speed attempt here...). Into Mian St and thru shopping strip of Greensborough to Grimshaw then... oh heck. lots of backstreets as DaveB refers to... secret backstreet route
to Greensborough Rd, and final sprint for those inclined past Watsonia Army Barracks Back streets
to Heidelberg and I ride slowly home while the others usually insanely
    ride up Burgundy St.
    Then...
left along lower? HeidelbergRd to PaperMill and left over Chandler Bridge (past Kew Boulevard entry) and Kilby Rd and back along Doncaster Rd

No new bike yet. I'll actually have to ride my mountain bike. I've been riding it along Beach Rd for the past couple of weeks and haven't found it to be too bad. I've got road slicks on it which makes things easier.

If I start falling back off the bunch too much I'll just turn around - but I suspect that I shouldn't be too bad as long as I don't go too hard on Saturday's ride.

I've managed to keep up a fair bit of fitness during my time off the bike by going to spin classes. You should have seen the look on the instructors' faces when I'd come into the classes with a neck brace on :-).

Been back on the bike proper for almost a month now.

Thanks for the ride description. I'll get a printout of this and follow it through the Melways.

    Cheers

slicked up mtb will do fine. as most of it is cruisy and up it wont make a difference. (PS i tend to dial my front suspension up as stiff as possible to avoid pumping all my energy into the front shock when climbing. Unless of course you are on a rigid mtb or have a cannondale lockout frontend...)

I'll draw up a map one day and post it up somewhere...

latest map fetish is putting together a interactive map of Boroondara that you can zoom in-out of with details on trickier bits/intersections/paths-joining and you can turn on/off different layers of main roads, 2ndary Rds, bikepaths, parks, recommended 2ndary road routes, bad hills, roads to avoid, coffee stops 😄 , etc. about one-third done (pays to have friends at Vicroads for map stuff...)

That sounds quite cool. Why Boroondara though - I
thought you were over in Donkey Caster? Is that in the
    same 'shire'?
Do you know how far east Boroondara extends?
I've got some complaints to make about the cobble
sections.. uh.. I mean Burke Rd. and Whitehorse Rd.
I'm getting sick of hooning down there in the dark
and hitting bigass holes in the road. I lost a Tacx
cage to the vibrator-tron the other day. I'm sure it
would be intact today if not for those pot holes. :S
    May it rest in pieces...

nah. im in Boroondara 'city of harmony. er bigomy, err indifference...'
    Im also part of BBUG
Whitehorse is due for resurfacing from Union to Kew junction in 05-06.
    not sure re Burke Rd.
You really gotta look at the alternates. Burke is uuugggleee.
i'll announce the map when sorted (sorry. its in flash. perfect scenario for it.
lookin like 'only' about 300k all up but you only load about 40k at a time depending upon what bits you want visible)

as in 2005 to 2006?!? You're jokin'? I'm gonna go through
four bikes in that time just from vibration damage!

They mostly suck though (for 'me'😉. Canterbury is nastier,
Burwood is not bad, but they both have worse hills, are further
and have less room for moron-dodging. Hmm.. Whitehorse is
door-prize central though with all the morons in Balwyn
wanting to re-panel their Volvos (on me). I think it's mostly the
hills that turn me off Cantebury or maybe it's just habit?

these people only think in financial years

    Tried Mont Albert Rd?
soon to have bike lane the entire length. is just right cos is 1.5 cars wide, or 1 car + 2 bikes wide 😄
if you go along that and east over Balwyn Rd you get a great downhill and then take one of the next 2 on the left to Whitehore again or all the way to Elgar and avoid the tramlines-chaos

  12. Roughly how far is it and what sort of time do you usually end up back at
    the Watsonia Army Barracks??

From memory the last time I was able to ride this ride and we did the
standard loop, without any extra bits, we got to Simpson Barracks at around
    8:55am.

Is Simpson Barracks near where you live or something? Just wondering about
the significance of this particular loc. to you .

Yeah, I live not far from the barracks......I was looking for an approx time
of arrival home before I seek executive approval from the wife to attend.

Not where I'm sitting.. they must be the tradey's
cars, parked out front, while they work on a new
    "feature wall" or "water feature"...

Occasionally, but typically I only think about it once
I've gone past. :-) Making RH turns on Burke there
sucks too. I've used it quite a bit more coming in to
Hawthorn, turning onto it from Balwyn oval(?).
