  1. Given tomorrow is a public holiday, I'm heading to Kinglake via the BR route... with a diversion to finally check out these monster gradients on Pigeon Bank Rd that Dancier informed us about. If those of us running a double chainring aren't off and walking, I'll be disappointed! 😉

Assuming it isn't bucketing down.. Same start time/point as the BR (7:20ish Doncaster Shopping Town)..

    Suggested route:

    - BR Start point
    - Doncaster Rd, Old Warrandyte Rd, Tindals Rd, Harris Gully Rd, Warrandyte.
    - Kangaroo Ground Warrandyte Rd, right onto Pigeon Bank Rd, Menzies Rd,
    - Henly Rd, Eltham - Yarra Glen Rd, Clintons Rd, though St Andrews, up to Kinglake.
    - Food

Home route depends on where you want to end up.. I'm planning to head back though Smiths Gully, down Kangaroo Ground Warrandyte Rd, though Warrandyte, Harris Gully Rd, then left up Beauty Gully Rd, Knees Rd, Park Rd, then back into the city via the Eastern Fwy Trail.

We can decide wait points on the way if required...

    cheers,
    GPL

I'm up for a trip to Kinglake, though maybe not at "lama pace". Have you checked out Pigeon Bank & Menzies Rds?

Not been to Pigeon or Menzies yet.. tomorrow will be friendly pace.. "i'll be taking it easy" (shutup blah!) 😉

  6. I'm up for something like that. Will probably go standard route to
Smith's Gully (I assume if you are going Clintons Rd you still intend to
stop at Smiths Gully). Then depending on my knees may have crack at
    Kinglake.

Plan is straight though to Kinglake.. stopping at the top.. unless people
want to stop at Smiths Gully and only use the top as a waiting point?

Wisely in bed. I had enough of hot days riding for the summer.

Sounds good.........have been wanting to do the hill to Kinglake for a while
    now.

Shortest ride ever for me. My knee was giving me a bit of pain clicking
in to the pedals, but that usually comes good by the end of the street.
Not so today. Got to the end of the street to the first hill, stood up
on the pedals to stretch and got agonising pain through the whole leg.
Kinglake suddenly didn't sound too attractive so turned back to home.

    Stats:
    Distance - 0.29 km
    Time - 1min 4 sec
    Avg speed - 16.4kmh
    Max speed - 25 kmh

Anyone got stats for a ride less than that (zero doesn't count)??

Heh. We all managed to get up, and I made it up in the middle
    chainring with a 42/25 gear 🙂

And we noticed that GPL had his 39/27 on, but I think he stayed away
from the 27. And I think he must have been taking it easy too,
because he wasn't trying to shake Gags and I.

One newbie, GPL, Gags, 'soiler, Dutch, myself made the best of the new
route (should make those undulations up Pigeon Bank Rd a regular!).
Couldn't fang it down the steep biatches of hills on Pidgy, 'cause
couldn't see what was around the corners.

King lake was fun, although quite unrelenting -- you just go up and it
never changes slope, except for a bit near the quarry when it looks
like it flattens out, but in reality gets steeper. I sounded like a
steam train at the start, but towards the end, the gu bar wore off,
and I could speak normally because my legs weren't doing anything
    anymore.

Most of the day, we did a great job of sticking together, and we
seemed to be going quite fast. Well matched group perhaps? People
have been doing their training over the break? Perhaps all the carbs
people have been eating for Xmas? I certainly felt stronger from the
    touring ride.

I think Gags and I got about 22:xx mins (I timed from the start of the
climb, not knowing the timing points) up King lake -- Gags -- what was
the correct time? GPL of course went to chase down some poor innocent
    triathlete.

No-one bothered with Burgundy St today. My last 10km or so was quite
slow -- managed to knock a km/h off my average in just a few minutes.

  13. Yeerrss. that quite a ride to take on after only 2 lil' pootles in 2 weeks!
oh well, thought I'd take it easy. No such luck. Those downy bits On pidgy 'might' be real fun now we know what's involved altho as you say not seeing oncoming stuff might negate the 'fun'.
Kinglake was a good climb. shady and steady. i brought up the rear, due mainly to the cheer'n'beer 😄

btw, my first impression of the Kinglake Bakery was....
    It was [censored]!
    Coffee 4/10
    Scroll 6/10
    'scenery' downright scary!$@#!!

Pigeon Bank Rd - jesus! Going down stats: 383m @ -19.6%. 'solier and I
went back up on the way home. One section is 54m @ 26%. Not sure how
accurate this is, but snipping the climb up into parts with the Polar
software show 20-26% gradients at the start. Average cadence on the
steepest bit in 39/27 was 35rpm @ 6.4km/h! The downhill is nice, but going
up is just nasty. Everyone has to do it at least once though. It puts
everything else back into perspective for a short while.

I sat on 90-91% MHR up Kinglake, caught mini/skinny tri-man just after he
passed some other guy. He tried to latch on, but didn't last 🙂 19:33, no
    PB.

123kms all up, 1965m of climbing (just missed out on the 2kms!)..

    cheers,
    GPL

    We has a knnoooo winnaaarrrr!

that musta been the lower 50m. I felt like i was gunna fall over the bars and cartwheel. probably very ordinary on a mtb, but damn [censored] scary on a roady going from 40kph (huggin brakes) to 70+kph in a silly-short time 🙄

So, let's do i again! (minus the hills after 😄 )

Damn, beat me in length by 70 metres (dunno about climbing).

Still, that really gentle but unrelenting slope for the kinglake climb
was slightly demoralising. It kept on going, yet you felt as if you
weren't climbing significantly at all (it's only ~4%). But looking
down the sides at all the washing machines showed otherwise 🙂

Kinglake was good, about 24:40 something, I think Laurie timed it at. Two bottles of powerade almost cures cramps. :o

I dead set reckon I could hit 100km/h on that steep bit without trying too
hard.....the only thing stopping me would be that I wouldn't be able to
knock off enough speed to make it around the right hander that is just after
the steep bit!!!! I ended up letting go of the brakes about 60m or so
before the bottom when it straightened up a bit and I hit 78km/h without
    even pedalling!!!!

26%....faaarrrkkkk......I remember how steep the 23% climb was at the
Gravity 12hr in Beechworth (I only rode all the way up it on the first lap)
so 26% is insane. I guess that the fact that it is on the road and not a
dirt track might assist in the traction stakes but you wouldn't want to pull
on the bars too hard or you would end up flipping off the back!!! If we do
it at the next BR, I might have to turn around and ride back up it just for
a laugh (still reckon GPL should put it down as a C2Max climb from
standstill at the bottom to wherever at the top).

I got home with 99.6km on the speedo......thought about riding 200m up the
road and back to crack the ton but couldn't be arsed. Was pretty shattered
and had a few calf cramps this arvo when walking down stairs at the shops
with the family. I think I need to drink more next time.

    Gags

Tim, we ended up doing 23min flat for the climb (from the "6km windy road"
(or whatever it says) sign to the 60km/h sign at Kinglake.
