The weather forecast at 7am was for damaging winds. They got that right,
it certainly damaged me. Although the speeds down into greensborough
were a hoot. Now I'm actually looking forward to studying for the rest
of the day for a rest.

I looked at my little graph of the last 72 hours of wind and wind
direction, before I left. Hey! Isn't the 35 km/h gusty headwind
meant to start at 10:00am usually? Not usually going all night,
anyway. It's now gusting at 60km/h!

I felt several times the crosswinds were going to remove my wheels
from out underneath me -- or blow me into the path of an overtaking
4WD. I need to put more weight on, or alternatively, lower my flaps.

At work earlier than I've been here all week. That with a couple of
laps around the Kew crit circuit, and pretty much all of us going
around Clintons road. Quite like the devil symbol on the elbow ๐Ÿ™‚

Today's compulsory TimC-is-a-klutz mishap? My nightflux light
deciding to become unscrewed with all the road vibrations, and going
for a roll down the hill at 50km/h. I had a nice drafting going on,
and I had to lose the peleton to go get it back. Outcome? Blown
globe. I'll have to go home early tonight. I might suggest to the
nightflux people to have a lock on the next generation of lights --
that, or they can buy me a CF frame so the road vibrations won't work
the light loose. This time, the light was definitely screwed in
tightly still at Doncaster. Last time it came out, I can't be so sure
    -- I think it was.

that was my first BR and a highly enjoyable ride, I was looking to flog myself and quite enjoyed the flogging, just woken up from my afternoon nap, nowing nursing a cup of tea and watching to see how far the trees can bend before they snap and listening to the Tigers fighting for their lives!

some great highlights from the ride, trying to keep my bike in a straight line from those wicked cross winds, GPLamas' rear tyre commiting suicide (and the $10 note trick, definately remember that one!), the hills, but definately Blahs' breakfast making a second appearance for the day was the absoluete highlight.

thanks for the ride guys ๐Ÿ™‚

not sure Blah's 'blahhhh' was a highlight tho???

trust a theatre teacher(?) to hold it in till he arrives at top of hill, get off bike, pause then apply his picasso so, well, theatrically!!!

about 2 or 3 minutes before where I thought it was ๐Ÿ™‚

No, the best way to prepare is to write programs, and to study great
programs that other people have written. In my case, I went to the garbage
cans at the Computer Science Center and I fished out listings of their
    operating system. -- Bill Gates

  8. My RR - Long..

FlyingDutch, Blah, DaveB, TimC, MikeyOz, and myself at the start - with Ess running late and catching us at the fruit shop stop.

Warrandyte Rd is still a complete shambles - how long does it take to fix a road, this section is getting beyond a joke. Blah, MikeyOz and I were confronted with a large brown dog at the top of the first climbs, with each of us having a yell at it to keep it off our legs.

One nasty northerly today, so no need to time the Kangaroo Ground climb... I took off on the bridge with the aim to hammer the first section then sit up and take it easy the 2nd half... that plan almost worked, until I turn around and see MikeyOz following.. no resting now, head down 'till the rock. Stopping at the rock in case MikeyOZ didn't catch the quick right at the roundabout. The rest of the group filed in soon after.. then came Blah, then soon after, came Blah's breakfast.. proof he put in a solid effort!

The cross wind on Eltham-Yarra Glen Rd was naaasssty.. and bladed spokes do not help one bit in such situations.. head wind was like a brick wall rolling down from the water tower.. On the start of the false-flat on the way to Clinton's Rd I see a bike tyre on the side of the road, someone recently had a blow out I think? Then before I know it BANG.. didn't feel a thing, rear side wall blow out / pinch flat on the brand new Michelin Pro Race 2!! grrr!! Looking for a safe place to fix/change, I take refuge on the opposite side of the road on a nice grassy area.. tube is gone.. tyre can be salvaged.. I stick an 'insta-patch' inside the tyre side wall, and get rolling again.. Slight bulge which should hold if I limp it home. As I get back onto road some tool in a 4WD ute spots me and unlike all other drivers who pass without a worry, he gets on the horn 200m from me and while he passes... wtf.. I wave with my middle finger.. My magical middle finger has the power to bring said ute to a stop just in front of me.. arh screw it I think, I'm in the mood for an argument/fisties after my tyre luck.. I ride up to the back of the ute and ask him to get a move on.. magic again.. he moves on slowly, then takes off.. [censored].

Ess was spot on about he car hill climb on Clintons Rd, the road there has a little more traffic than normal, mostly well behaved. I make it to the store and get a new tube.. short snack stop and we are off again.. On the StAndews-Diamond Creek run I see DaveB hanging onto the leading bunch, nice work DaveB, intentional effort or have I never noticed before?

I 'try' to keep at the back of the bunch waiting for the complete blow out to take place.. argh, I can never take it easy when there is racing to be done, and it looks like the tyre is holding up. I chase the front bunch (Blah and MikeyOz) down.. Still felt like I was sitting on a time-bomb, so I decide to leave the group for the day to fix this tyre.. plan was to stick a $10 note around the tube where the sidewall went awol.. Say my goodbyes as the tail wind would mean record breaking times back into the city... the $10 does an awesome job, although I wrapped it a few mm tighter than needed, I'll fix this when I have a floor pump handy!. Tyre is better than ever, so I put the hammer down for an ITT until I either catch the bunch or get home, whichever comes first.

An awesome run of lights both green and red (yeah, sue me, I was having a bad day anyways).. 10km(ish) later I spot Ess in the back streets, either he has had a flat or is only a little off the bunch, who were just around the corner.. Hit the group on Greensborough Rd, and fly past.. which may or may not have been met with surprise not sure, I was off!.. Rest time though the last of the back streets.. now Burgundy St.. Ess leads-out and I struggle to hang on.. we _just_ get through the last set of lights and drop the rest of the group.. arh well.. cheers for the pull to/though those lights Ess!

Down to the Boulie and a lap or two of the crit course with fd, Blah, TimC and MikeyOz before we all depart home....

I'll post the Polar HRM altitude graph/stats tomorrow.. stats I can get now:

    Distance: 90.1kms
    Vertical accent: 1350m
    Speed Avg: 30.8

    cheers,
    GPL

  9. Yeh, I thought so... What on earth made everyone stop there? That last
bit is bad enough without an audience!

    nice report.....

its all relative, compared to GPLama, im not skinny..!! It was like chasing a hare...

I believe the bike noise is due to the wax lube, well thats when it started anyway, thinking of going back to the teflon based lube though, just takes longer to clean, the wax lube is great come cleaning time, all take off in a matter of a minute

I was dark on riding down that stretch of road yesterday thinking why do they rip up so much road at a time and then take there time putting it back the way it should be.

Riding up to Kinglake was a nightmare yesterday, seemed like the wind was coming from the north pole, was it cold and gusty. Then riding along the ridge to the Whittelsea turnoff, you had to lean into the wind to compensate for the gusts coming over the hills. The good thing was the fastest 10k's I have ever done was coming into Whittelsea and heading out to the turnoff to Hurstbridge.

Dave, Dutchy and Tim C were killing me on that run back, just looking at my HR stats, I was b/n 183-190, just trying to hang on. Thank christ they decided to ease up a bit.

I dropped my bottle, going over the speed humps. No worries for the pull, but never again! My hammy and quad in my right leg were wobbling after that effort. Sometimes I'm just too dumb for my own good.

    Glad you enjoyed yourself Mikey!

Heh. I'll second that. I was only just hanging on. Hit the wall at
the boulavard. Then went down to studley park instead of taking the
next turnoff. Mind you, I was ready to take that Yarra boulavard (?)
climb after the crit circuit, I just didn't want to get lost ๐Ÿ™‚

I took the old [censored] in today (raining, and two panniers full of
[censored] I want to ferry between home and ork), and gee it was slow. I
blame the bike rather than my legs. Oh, and I didn't eat all my pasta
lastnight, because I ran out of parmesan, and discovered that putting
tasty cheese on pasta in the same quantities I put parmesan on is just
    ICK! Go parmesan! Go umami!

I hope its real parmesan and not the "sweaty feet" parmesan that is sold by Kraft....

I don't believe that Kraft makes, or sells, cheese. Rather, they sell
substances that look like cheese on the surface, but after careful
examination can be shown to be something very different.
