I was wondering why the gear change on my bike was so [censored], I was just looking at the crankset (AMAR DUO it says) on my bike and it looks like someone has taken a hammer to the teeth, they really are knackerd, some are almost completely worn, I was gonna change it for a Shimano Deore hollowtech crankset (Can get very cheep) but how do I know what size bottom bracket I need, what should be measured, are the frames a standard size, I'm seeing 68 X 107 ,110,115 or 122.5 for the BB whats all this mean and how do I know what I want.
As i said total noob, used to be able to strip a bike with my eyes closed years ago but it's been quite a while and I think the best way to get back into it, for me, is not buy a bew bike, DIY.

Aha, thanks for that, I would have been trying to get a square peg in a round hole, The crankset I was getting Shimano Deore hollotech 1 FC-M540 is not there but I know it's octalink but don't know if it's V1 or 2, it's 2006 and appears to be V2, but at least I'm kinda on the right track but it seems to have caused me more confusion as well with lengths and other dimensions, guess a visit to the bikes shop is gonna be needed.
Shimano UK indicates two versions of the FC-M540. Both are Octalink interface and one indicates a BB-ES51/30 bottom bracket. I don't know what the /30 indicates but when you look at the BB-ES51 bottom brackets there are three available spindle lengths; 113, 118 and 121. Unfortunately I can't find any indication of which length is required for that particular crank but if I had to guess I would guess 118mm.

I think, to be safe, I'll remove the old BB before I buy anything and see what it says on that, I guess if I but the same dimensions it'll be ok. Cheers Ace
[font=Comic Sans MS]I have the shimano hollowtech /octolink system and hit a snag in replacing The worn BB, even though the LBS were replacing the original, which was a BB-ES51/73E X126.Shimano supplied them with a BB-ES51/73X126 The E signifies the shaft is offset, meaning the one side of the shaft (the sections the crank attaches) to is longer than the other, although the shaft length remains the same.[/font]
[font=Comic Sans MS]In the case of my set-up it meant my whole chainring alignment was out. Once they fitted the wrong one, I picked it up immediately and we ordered and replaced it with the correct offset one.[/font]

I'm not so sure that your chainrings are toasted. Find the funny looking teeth and look exactly opposite them on the same chainring. Do you see teeth that look the same? If so, what you described as "knackered teeth" are actually shifting aids that are intended to improve shifting.

Yeah, it's got those, teeth that are shorter than the rest but I'm talking about teeth with chunks missing and badly worn.
I got the Deore LX M-572 crankset and the LBS sold me a ES-71 68x113 bottom bracket and installed it. I looked at the chainline and it was set way too far inward. In fact, it was so far inward that the inside edge of the small chainring was scraping the BB shell, so I filed the tabs on the chainring down to clear the shell. It was my first time buying a new crank and I figured the LBS knew what they were doing, selling me the BB and installing it like that. After a few months riding like that I got fed up and decided to figure it out myself. After looking up specs for the crankset, I saw mentioned that it was designed to work with the ES-51 68x121 BB *only*. As my understanding of cranks goes, they are spec'd out with a specific BB size they are designed to be used with, and you just need to figure that out.

Hi i have a chainset fc-m540 and bb es-25e ( the e stands for the front Derailleur mount) thats why its offset mine is 118-73e
