  1. I commute 16 miles daily on my sweet KHS Sport mountain bicycle. Recently, I began hearing a harsh creaking noise each time I pedal. When I got home I checked and it turns out that there is a crack on one of the chainrings. I recently got a new BB since it cracked. It's a Shimano BB, the model number is UN73. I have a road crankset: Shimano Nexave; I was wondering what other road cranksets would fit my BB based on the crankset I have right now? The reason for a road crankset is that I don't have to pedal as much to get somewhere. I am thinking about getting a Shimano 105 Triple Crankset it's seems good, but I don't know if it'll fit my BB:

    What do you think?

Oh, and here is my BB:

  2. Shimano 105 triple FC-5503 uses BB 5500 which is an Octalink splined bottom bracket. BB's are cheap in relation to crankset. You'd have to drop down to Tiagra level to keep the square taper interface.

If it is just the chain ring that is cracked, that can be replaced for much cheaper than the whole crankset.

That crankset will NOT fit your BB. Your BB has a square taper spindle, whereas that 105 crankset requires a BB that is Shimano splined (also known as Octalink-be careful though as there is V1 and V2 Octalink and that 105 triple takes a 118.5mm V1).

High quality square-taper cranksets are not really made anymore except for by Campagnolo and they require a campy-tapered BB.

You need a crankset like this:

If you really do need a replacement square-taper crankset, you might be able to find something on eBay.

Again, if it is a chainring that you need, that should be easy to find and will cost $25-30 or less.

  4. I took off the Nexave crankset to look at it, and noticed that the chainrings could not be removed. 🙁

I'll look on ebay for a "square tapered" road crankset.
