before Lance even had cancer.
The kid was beating pro triathletes in his teens. Merckx predicted he'd
eventually win the Tour back in 1993 or so.
Another thing that so many people have forgotten is that Merckx was very
close to Lance for many years. I don't remember precisely how it came
together, but Eddy supplied Merckx and his Caloi brand to Motorola I think
for their entire existance. I am now remembering that is goes even further
back to the 7/11 era. Anyway, Eddy usually works closely with teams when he
supplies bikes and was one of the first to help Lance get his position
sorted out on the bike, among other things. Axel was also offered a contract
for several years back when he had just turned pro (maybe in his second or
third season). Eddy would have said that (Tour prediction) but in context,
remember it was about a young kid that had just won at the World's Road Race
at a very young age and also under his wing to some degree. It is also worth
noting that he never said that about his own son even though Axel cracked
the top 10 before Lance did.
I remember that there was some question about whether the bike LA won
Worlds on was actually a Merckx or a rebadged/disguised Litespeed. I know
that those two worked together for a while, but that race was (if I
remember correctly) before that association.

"We should not march into Baghdad. ... Assigning young soldiers to
a fruitless hunt for a securely entrenched dictator and condemning
them to fight in what would be an unwinnable urban guerilla war, it
could only plunge that part of the world into ever greater
instability." George Bush Sr. in his 1998 book "A World Transformed"
The world view had changed dramatically since that was written. You are
aware of the attacks on the WTC and Pentagon?
Neither of which had anything to do with Iraq. Certainly the latter part
of GHWB's statement seems to be proving to be a prescient one.
