Boots for a Bigfoot.

If you detour via Richmond in N Yorks, I think Altberg also make large sizes (they also do made-to-
measure, but expect to really pay).

I get the WalkTall www.walktall.couk.com catalogue sent to me every few months, they specialise in
shoes and some clothes in the larger sizes. I'm wary of buying from catalogues from past experience
but am tempted to get a larger pair of boots and use thick socks for padding if needed....

Altberg charge for making up special lasts but if they have standard lasts at size 13 they might
well make you a pair without extra charge but you would still be taking something of a risk if you
ordered them without having your feet measured.

They do have a website but I have found that e-mails very often go unanswered and getting a pair of
boots made takes time. I am still waiting for my latest pair to materialise.

in my experience if shops have to order boots in, then you are stuck with them even if they
dont fit :-(

Which is about as much use as a chocolate teapot.

Thanks for the lowdown on Brasher boots, its always another brand to add to my list of decent
manufacturers.

I'm just looking for a pair of boots for general winter hiking, not heavy winter crampon stuff.

I've ordered from WalkTall in the past - they say you can return stuff "unworn" within 14 days for
exchange / refund.

However they don't have much in the way of hiking boots :-(

I'd advise that you track down a shop that has 13/48 Scarpas and/or Meindl in stock and go there -
rather than considering anything more expensive. I know that, for example, Outside in Hathersage, in
Derbyshire, have Scarpas in stock up to 50 (15.5) and they had a choice of two width fittings in 48s
when I bought my boots (Scarpa there recently (for UKP 119). It was a 120 mile round trip for me and
utterly worth it.

I don't have any knowledge of shops in Scotland but I'd email them and find which have 48s in stock
and go and visit them.

I know it looks like I'm stating the obvious but I thought that it might be helpful for you to know
that there _are_ shops that carry 48s, and above, as normal stock and don't require a special order.

Perhaps Pete Clinch, or someone else beyond Albion's Plain, could suggest a likely candidate or
two for comprehensive boot stockists... and no doubt somewhere where I could have got my boots for
UKP 89 ;-)

Well, I spent a couple of hours on yell.com and on the phone...

Cotswold Outdoor, Glasgow, none.

Clearwater army surplus (Glasgow), will have to order:

Taskforce Surplus, Stirling, will have to order

Munro's Specialist Outdoor Shop, Pitlochry, none.

Hoggs (cupar) - only Brasha boots in stock at size 13

Mountain Warehouse, Sterling mills outlet village - they only stock size 12s - when I was there a
few years ago (and they were called "because it's there" they had lots of size 13s)

Tiso's Edinburgh, a few "£88 ish"

Sports Warehouse, Edinburgh - Trezeta Davos GTX Boot £62 or Karrimor KSB CHeviots at £96

Not much luck, so far apart from Sports Warehouse. Are those two makes any good?
