  1. I was recently in Orlando florida and rode a bunch of rides with a group out of Windermere, Fl....all in all some really good rides, some pretty fast and lots of fun....

anyhow the reason for this post is there was a guy who i saw a number of times, who when i first saw him, just thought, ok some big muscle head body builder guy who'll get dropped on the first hill - well I'm not impressed easily, but for such a big guy, he smoked the groups and was always off or in the front.

I later found out that he's a cat 3 racer. If I had to give stats I'd say put it this way, with his lat spread, I'm amazed he didn't get some 'lift' and start flying.

I never got a chance to talk to him, so i'm wondering if anyone here or maybe you know of someone who tries both sides of the coin, to have such muscle mass, yet train for competitive cycling, and where's the split in training?

A guy like this must train every day, with some combination of weights and obviously cycling 130+ miles a week - any thoughts/ideas/suggestions?

    Pete-

  2. I myself even though not a Cat anything wieght train at least 3 times a week and ride around 100-150 miles. I'm a big guy too 6'2" 220 lbs. I never get dropped to the back. When you see those huge muscle guys keep in mind the real serious ones will do 20-30 minutes high intensity cardio. I'll do 25-30 minutes with a 150-165 HR and that really helps climbing.

  3. Forgive my ignorence if I'm wrong but hills in florida do they exist? the only changes in elivation I've seen on my limited travels in Florida were bridges.

I figured that most guys with muslce definition and good size must be pretty strong, and women too for that fact...

and you're right about the 'hills' in Florida, these are quiet rollers more than anything else, some get steep but nothing like mountains

  5. I weigh in at about 194lbs. 6'0.
I have never bike raced, but here is some information:

the bench press is very overrated
the french press is very underrated
hiking fast uphill up a steep hill without weights is very underrated
swimming as much as possible as fast as possible is underrated

    so...

swim as much as possible with good form,
run sprints daily with good running shoes,
pick one weighlifting exercise that you can do every other day (not bench press and preferably french press of course), and
don't complain to anyone, especially yourself, about how hard you are training
just to get in a little bit better shape.

    one final note:
pick a set time to go to bed and wake up at close to a set time,
to not shock your system too much.

  6. Sounds like another athlete on steroids.

But he is emphasizing NON-endurance based muscular developement, versus long efforts of lesser power output.

Many steroid based athletes ramp up to cycling well after:

    1) retooling their training (adapting to cycling, sprinting, cadences, breathing)
    2) building skills and confidence in pack riding, corning, decending etc..

Cycling gets all types---and plenty of dopers from the other sports too.

btw: Florida has many bridges and a few steep driveways---but ZERO hills.

What makes me sound like I am on steroids?
    I would never take steroids.
Steroids make you (the user) crazy.

    Japheth 😕

  8. everyone i know that WAS a bodybuilder that transitioned into cycling has a difficult time reducing their upper body weight for competitive racing.
